Ubisoft has confirmed last month's rumor that Ivory Towers and Ubisoft Reflections, the team behind Driver: San Francisco, are working on a new racing game called The Crew for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The next-gen racer places an emphasis on arcade action similar to Burnout and Need For Speed, but treads new ground by bringing the genre into the MMO space.
A CG trailer shown at Ubisoft's E3 press conference highlighted a group of cars running from the police across a variety of American cities. The trailer ended with the phrase "Never Drive Alone," as well as confirmation of an "Early 2014" release date. Look out for much more on The Crew very soon.

If The Crew uses the same driving model as Driver SF, bring it on! I feel like Ubisoft can be the next big developer when it comes to actually good arcade racers if they keep that driving model in their games and refine it. I also think it looks good. It's amazing how not using all those crappy effects can be refreshing when it comes to visuals.
I was seriously stoked when watching this on the stream ... but egh... I hope "online persistent" is an option. If this requires a net connection then count me out.

Looks like Ubisoft has gone back to their DRM roots, now I wouldn't be surprised if they announce Watch_Dogs as being "always online" because it "encourages people to play together" and "experiences demand always online"

I asked Gerighty what would happen if someone was playing the game and their internet went down. "They won't be able to save the game, unfortunately," he said. "All our saves are server-based, it's one of those things that this new generation… it's just like World of Warcraft. If the internet connection goes on World of Warcraft, that's it, your saved game goes. It's one of the unfortunate side-effects, but I think [we're] going to a world where the experiences demand that."
I honestly don't see how this game works offline. Unless you are fond of dumb AI in MEGAHUGE gameworld. One thing is SimCity, another is this. Loneliness. Skyrimness.
Altho I don't really much care for the game due to specific gameplay (mechanics), I'm curious how it will work.
The parts in red actually scare me a lot, it sounds like an evil masterplan more than something that applies to a single game. It's worrisome how they think that online is "a necessity" rather than an addition.
The way he stopped himself at the "one of those things that's new this generation..." ? Scares the living fuck out of me. We've already got "must connect every single day forever!111" ominous shit from Microscum, and now two huge game announcements from Ubi that are online-only. I'm seriously worried about Watch_Dogs now.

Valve said this was coming quite a while ago, didn't they? To me it comes as no suprise that every game (and not only) is full of social stuff these days... it's where the big guys want to lead the industry. It doesn't mean I like it, but sadly there's nothing I can do about that. However, with The Crew I do believe that this is what they wanted from the start, something like Motor City Online was (I think... I only saw that game in magazines back in the day).
Well, online game or not, I'm seriously hyped about this. I rewatched that trailer and could only surrender to the zoom in/zoom out of the map of NY city, insanely big! Gameplay can still be crap, but that's not the first impression I got from that extensive gameplay trailer
I don't care about requiring internet connection to play really, especially with racing games. It's never fun playing against dumb AI anyway. This game finally looks like a proper racing game, let's wait and see.
I know, I was just offering a counterpoint. I already know this is an MMO, we knew that at E3 and it was then that my interest - which was fairly high during the initial presentation - dropped to almost zero. If I can get a $10-15 RU key then I may pick it up, depending on how solo-able it is, but egh... otherwise, I'm just not fussed any more. I'm less than thrilled about The Division being online only but at least that is being developed with solo in mind.
they will not remove online only , they think of it as a MMO

Well wat you want, they will do all the complex physics calculations in the cloud to give you a true and immersive experience like you have never experienced. It really can't be done on a single platform, especially on PC.
