I've always been curious and can't find anywhere what this means:

What is a 'limited' DVD release?

I've seen a lot of releases titled <moviename> *LIMITED* but have never really known what it means.

Does it mean it was released to a limited audience?

Yes. It refers to the fact that the movie was released to a limited number of theatres.
