Sick of the lousy castrated Internet explorer version? Tried out Netfront and Thunderhawk but not satisfied? Then a ported Mozilla might be your choice if you are using Smartphone or a PPC.

Quote:

Earlier this week, we reported that a Windows CE version of Minimo is under development. In response to the interest generated, developer Doug Turner has posted some more details about the Windows CE port. The application is currently built against the Pocket PC 2003 SDK (this may change) and the executable is 3.8 megabytes at the moment. It requires about 5 megabytes of memory to display the Google homepage.

The brave can try compiling Minimo for Windows CE; the slightly less brave can download a precompiled Minimo zip build, which is described as "basically the second build that... actually rendered a page successfully."

Windows CE developers are invited to help contribute to the port, particularly in the areas of Windows integration and the user interface. The relevant tracking bug is bug 277211.

Download for WinCE

Right now I'm using Netfront but the sucker won't work well in VGA 640*480 Sad.

You need to build a special kernel with very rare drivers like for the touch screen, video chipset and so on. There are some versions available for most IPAQ's and one for Dell axim X5 (only works in ram not flashed and there is much more left to do). This includes both GUI and the kernel. The whole distro is called Familiar .The developers also don't get support from the manufacturers which hinders the development which is sad. The hardware is also pretty different from a standard pc.

For IPAQ users there are two environments available today.

GPE

Opie

And here is a very early screenshot of Mozilla minimo on a Linux handhelds device.

HP (IPAQ manufacturers) have a very good relation with the open source community. That's why most of their stuff works in Linux and drivers are available. But It's a whole another business with other manufacturers like Dell.

Woops, I totally forgot that a compiled version for WinCE was available, not only Familiar Linux. I added the link in my first post. The current version was released recently (v0.003, 7th mars). I'm gonna try it now Smile.

edit:

It says WindowsCE so it could be working on both Pocket PC and Smartphone. It would be nice if someone else is trying it out.
