Quote:

In its ongoing missions to be known as anything other than "the company that made the game for unconventional virtual reality cybersex," Second Life developer Linden Lab has bought digital distribution platform Desura. It may not be a huge name, but the site is awfully popular with lesser-known indie developers as it's entirely open, which fits in with Linden quite nicely.

Desura started as a spin-off of mod hub ModDB, basically the same idea but for indie games. It aims to take the fuss and bother of selling games off developers, handling sales and providing subsites with blogs, videos, comments, and whatnot, and a spread of community features.

Linden hasn't bought ModDB or its sibling sites IndieDB and SlideDB, mind--only Desura.

"Desura's talented team, thriving business, and impressive technology are a great fit for Linden Lab," Linden CEO Rod Humble said in the announcement. "This acquisition gives us a global platform for serving creative developers of all kinds, and we're looking forward to growing both Desura's global community of gamers and its fantastic portfolio of thousands of games, mods, and other content."

Linden Lab has done more than Second Life, of course. It's made several other creative games/tools/things, the most recent of which is Patterns. It's also working on iPad build 'em up Blocksworld, which it bought earlier this year.

[Full disclose etc: Shacknews owner GameFly runs its own digital distribution store.]

I don't usually create new topics but I found this interesting and there wasn't a fitting Desura topic to use and bumping the Second Life thread from ~2005 wouldn't have been ideal either so I had to create a new one.

Wonder how this will affect the client, come to think of it how has Gamestop buying Impulse affected that client, haven't heard much about how that worked out.
(Maybe it won't be much of a change?)

Well shit. There are some good indie games on Desura that are not on Steam. Hoping the new owners don't f$ck it up.

UnderRail for example. A truly great classic post apocalyptic turn based cRPG, currently in alpha stage. Really enjoyable.

Last year Desura was acquired from Linden by a company called Bad Juju (prophetic much?) and then this happened...

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/desura-are-in-a-bit-of-trouble-with-not-paying-developers.5426

A short while back, Desura - after months of silence and ignoring developers - finally issued a statement about how the previous year's take over had affected developers receiving their money from sales through Desura. The staffer tries to play the guilt card, appealing to people for patience and understanding because the CEO is "ill" and couldn't work on sorting out the issues.

Understandably this wasn't exactly met with resounding applause, since devs still weren't receiving their money.. but Desura had been paid by people purchasing games.

Fast forward two weeks;

http://gamasutra.com/view/news/245334/Desuras_parent_company_has_filed_for_bankruptcy.php

Desura's owners have filed for bankruptcy, which likely means developers won't get anything from all the sales from the last few months as it will go to creditors. YAY!

Yup, a few of my dev friends have been less than thrilled about not being paid for all their games sold on Desura, and then being fobbed over with pathetic excuses and bleeding heart pleas.

This could have been handled a lot better but I guess Desura just couldn't compete against giants like Steam once they too started taking on the indie developers.

Steam Greenlight started out a bit wobbly but now there's multiple indie games released nearly each day on Steam.

Interestingly the underrail dev, Styg, removed the desura link from his website about a week ago without any explanation.

He is now offering anyone who bought the game on Desura steam keys for free, which is a pretty nice gesture.

Edit: Also if Moddb goes down, we may lose a lot of large mods as a lot of them are hosted solely on that site. Similar situation happened with IGN and NWNVault, hundreds of modules were lost.
