Recently I`ve discovered construct 2 engine and after spending few days on watching/reading various tutorials i`m pretty sure that platformer game can be quite easily made in this engine (i`ve already made some mockups for checking various things). Engine is really great and solves many programming problems, itself it doesnt require programming in literal sense - it uses kind of pre-made conditions/actions system which along with variables can be used to make almost any mechanic you can think off.

Simply what i woud like to make is a dark gritty atmospheric platformer game, 16-bit like era homage to dark souls series. As for general gameplay and style - something like nes/snes/gba era castlevania, and other simillar titles.

here are some samples of what i think would be suitable (and more important - easy and fast to make, so we could progress with design and game itself and not stuck on graphics phase)

http://imgur.com/h8xC3n7,P0ydwXC,54tanpu,jjWpYKP,kQgYjUE,oqteOA5,SEv4XU9

I have a background in graphics but not particullary game design, more like web/advertisements/banners/logos etc. I can make some backgrounds, also could try to make some atmospheric music and sounds maybe.

What I lack is character design skill so someone with eye for that kind of design chars would be very welcomed, of cuz additional graphics for backgrounds and game design ideas would be also nice. Characters would be sprite animated with as many frames as we would like it to be.

Great thing about construct is that after we will nail the basic game mechanics and graphics tile sets anyone can almost instantly add to the level development and bring general ideas to enchance the design. Also graphics are not constricted to tiles, they can be PNGs with alpha, irregular shapes etc - we have total freedom. Its possible to make for example clean version of wall and then separately make some dirt, blood and other stuff as alpha pngs which can be added to that wall (or any other thing, sprites can be resized, rotated, colored etc etc all in editior, it even has photoshop like blending options)

I remember when we were previously talking about making a game lot of people offered to make graphics design etc, maybe someone is interested now when project can be easily pushed further than just "talking-on-forums" stage? What do you guys think?

I was just thinking about this subforum and I was about to post something. but then I saw your thread. I'm a huge DS fan and I like the idea, but I'm just like you, only good with banners/logos & etc. I've never tried to create a character...only cars - in 3D Sad.

yea, i can make some backgrounds and other elements but chars are pain in the ass, not really my thing Sad

Construct still requires some logic if you want to do some cool stuff, the more you know, the better it will turn out. But you're right. It takes a ridiculous amount of effort out of things like platforming. It amazes me that it isn't more popular since it runs in your browser with proper audio support.

I'd help, but I've got my own one to worry about Crying or Very sad

Basically as a first "project" i`m putting more emphasis on actually make it complete (finish the game, or at least get out of prototyping phase and make some actual level design), not to put some crazy mechanics. Anyway basic stuff is quite simple, i`ve already done some prototypes with normal/fast running, double jumping, ladder climbing, health, basic enemy movement etc, there are also tons of videos/tutorials on various mechanics. Of course it would require some work to put this all thogether but i`m amazed how fast and relatively easy this editor is, wish i would knew about it earlier.

theres no point really, mostly there are only square mock ups to check the game mechanics.

anyway here are two examples. those are exe files (run newproject.exe) but games works perfectly in modern browser (its html5 based) but you must 1st upload files online first. scanned with antivirus, you can scan it on your own or block it or just dont run in if you dont wanna. File is quite large due to that exporting dlls but those prototypes in html5 are only about 0.5-1mb large. If anyone have some 1-2 mb free hosting space i can upload it online, i myself have only work related FTPs so cant really use it for that purpose.

quick stuff with mario tiles, basic mechanics, coins collecting saved to variable (resets after death), no double jump but you can sprint and jump further while holding shift, 3 paralax background layers (little depth effect) etc

picking up items, some basic animation (sword isnt sprite animated, its basically rotating + fade out effect in engine), simple enemies with particle based hit animation, they die after 3 hits.
