PC games sales in 2017 are almost as big as all console sales combined
Quote: | PC gaming appears to be in a really healthy stage. Today, GamesIndustry published some interesting statistics about the video-game sales of 2017. GamesIndustry reached out numerous analysts in order to create the following graph, and browsed through lots of financials and sales figures.
As we can see, PC gaming accounts for 28% of the total game market in 2017, whereas consoles (this includes all consoles) accounts for 29%. As such, and if we compare the PC individually with each console, we can easily see how more profitable PC gaming actually is.
Going into slightly more details, PC gaming generated $32.3 billion in 2017 and saw a YoY growth of 1.4%. Boxed and downloaded PC games generated $27.1 billion whereas browser PC games generated for $5.2 billion.
Naturally, the biggest video-game market right now is the mobile which accounts for 43%.
Still, and what’s really important here, is that PC gaming is a really healthy market, something that more and more console-only developers appear to acknowledge. With the exception of first-party titles, the PC is currently getting all sorts of console games; from fighting to arcade and JRPGs.
Below you can find GamesIndustry’s graph. Here’s to a better and bigger new year!

VR had some bigger sales than I expected, but it's still a pittance. As a VR developer, you'd be better off firing all your staff and assembling an E-Sports team.

I guess many people bought Battlefront, Overwatch and Destiny 2 lootboxes.
Yay?

From the numbers it may look like PC gaming is alive and kicking and bigger than it's ever been, but when you look closely you realize that it's only a severe case of elephantiasis
If we remove free-to-play and mobile-like garbage, all the professional lootboxing, the Asian market's huge influx and the fact that revenues from microtransactions has practically doubled in the past few years, the overall picture is actually a grim one. Not the direction that PC gaming should pursue at all, it's almost like committing seppuku through pride and accomplishment.

It's not like console numbers aren't including all of those those as well now and part of the huge influx of the asian (chinese) market atm is thx to PUBG which something like a killerapp for pc atm, and also a non F2P title without toxic Microtansactions that should be worth something. |
True, ultimately we really are all in the same boat so to speak, though that doesn't alleviate the problem. It's an unfortunate general picture (and alas, not unexpected), aggravated by our specific situation.
I'm being unnecessarily old-fashioned by saying this, but the sight of a PC market being carried by a multiplayer-only earlyaccessian Twitch paradise isn't something that I find too pleasant. It's understandable though since times have changed, I'm sure it's a fun experience and it's surely better than being represented by MOBAs or all the scams from triple-A corporate greed, but still.
Thankfully, there are companies and people around that still care about the concept of genuine single player experiences that don't insult the poor gamer, there aren't many but..they're there (for now!), kinda like pandas.
