You suck for logging off Skype straight away Cool Face

I'd stick with ASUS, Dell or Lenovo. I haven't really kept track of the new models with CES, but I'm sure they all refreshed their lineups. Reason I don't recommend Samsung: colleague of mine bought his very first Windows laptop (yep, that kind of guy) over Christmas. While he was pleased with the build quality, Samsung's still Samsung so they bombard you with more bloatware than anyone else. ASUS (to compare with another "average consumer" brand) doesn't put much on theirs; it comes with some cloud & backup stuff, but that's about it. Samsung on the other hand likes to even preinstall fucking Zylom games Poker Face

Samsung are pretty cool if you intend to install Ubuntu on them. Well at least if you want to fry your firmware that is grinhurt

Why not buy a new macbook pro and install windows on it?

Yeah, I mean the new ones, they look sexy, fully aluminum and have a ridiculous high resolution. And yeah they are expensive but sadly the "sexiest" notebook you can buy for money.

Edit: Oh and of course http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/not-good-samsung-uefi-laptops-can-brick-when-booting-ubuntu-20130130/

I had an Asus Zenbook UX31 and loved it. But the Zenbook Prime is better, so i upgraded. My favorite laptop i have ever owned. Build quality is great.

Get one with the Scandisk SSD. Thing is smoking fast on boot. Plays skyrim quite well on lower detail.

Care to elaborate?

Because Apple, and it's more expensive, has lower resolution, no SSD, heavier and thicker in the similarly priced model. Hell, it's worse in every aspect.

And if you are talking about the really really new Retina crap (hate their retarded naming, or the lack of it). That's 30-40% more expensive.

And I don't even want Windows on it. I intend to work and maybe watch movies while traveling.

The retina "crap" looks amazing. You say high resolution, no? Laughing
The only thing that has kept me from replacing my MacBook Air with a rMBP 13 is the damn Intel 4000. I hope the second generation finally has a dedicated chip in there.

Also, since it's a laptop and you need to move it, be sure to buy an IPS screen. I know you mentioned it, but I want to stress. The MBA is not IPS, and it so fucking shows when on the go. It's an OK TN, but nothing compared to IPS.

That is the entire problem with any high resolution display right now. Bravo to Apple on pushing higher resolutions into the world, boo on Apple for not backing it up with sufficient hardware. The "retina" MBPs lag like crazy (4 of them in our UK office), it's ridiculous how bad it is. Don't expect a dedicated chip though, because they'll want to stick to the thinner design and one less partner to deal with.

And yes, the "retina" term is nonsense, because everyone associates it with Apple's magical 326 PPI (and just to annoy you Leo, even Apple talk about pixels per inch and not fucking dots per inch Smile). That number only applies at 12 inches (30.5 cm or 1 foot). Apple's displays sit at about 220 PPI, meaning that particularly for a laptop, a lot of the time it's not "retina" as you'll be closer than the "retina" distance (which is about 41cm or 16 inches for 220 PPI). And EVEN THEN - that only applies to someone with 20/20 vision; if you have better vision you'll need to sit even further away, if your vision is worse you'll need to sit closer.

No matter how they call it, they are still incredibly high DPI displays, and the quality is amazing.

I read now on Anand that it is a OS issue rather than a GPU issues; the UI rendering is just not accelerated enough. He claims that he didn't see any significant difference between 15 rMBP w/ discrete vs. 13 rMBP with 4000. He says, in most cases where there was lag (or rather, low FPS), it was universally that the app was using 1 core at 100% while the other was idle. So it sounds like a bundle of issues not necessarily related to the 4000. And since I don't plan on gaming, I have to wonder if the software just won't get better and buy one. Or wait for second generation ones with Haswell and get that promised 650m-like performance?

@ spoiler

That may be the case, but in that case I wouldn't take the chance until I'd have seen it fixed in action myself. Because it was horrifying to watch the guys on their 2000 pound monster machines..only to lag out because a website used more than 5 images lol wut

It made the Mac Mini I work on when I'm in the UK look blazing fast (standard 5400 RPM drive, woohoo Neutral).

Mac mini is really great. I use that for work also. Sure, drive is a little slow, but it's still a great machine, and very small. Just make sure to put 8GB in there if you want to have Xcode run with Instruments connected to a device. Laughing

No, that 5400 RPM drive really doesn't work. It's got huge I/O latency and especially when you're working with a lot of files that need to get indexed it makes the entire OS just crumble into an almost full stop (like I said somewhere else, OS X's disk scheduler is pretty bad, really baffles me that they stuck with 5400 RPM drives for so long). It's just that the guys are too fucking lazy to stick an SSD drive in - they've got got a fucking Maplin's (electronics store) right across the bloody street. Next time I'm over there I'll probably just cross the street, buy an SSD and stick it in because when I'm not there the damn thing isn't used anyway Neutral

The form factor is nice though, so I'm very curious to see how quickly Intel come with multiple versions of their "Next Unit of Computing" (essentially a barebone version of all the mini PC's out there).

ANYWAY, garus, made a decision through our off-topic nonsense yet? Cool Face

Seriously? My next laptop will be MacBook Air. I bought so-called "gaming laptop" once and never again.

Like iNatas said, I would wait for Haswell, how they perform, but MacBook Air is my next logical buy.

But let me say that if you have the money, a second generation "retina" MBP 13" would be my take @Przepraszam. Smile

My sister recently got MacBook Pro with Retina display and god damnit I am fucking jelous. I wanted to trade with her with my lenovo, she kicked me out of the room Sad Crying or Very sad

If I ever buy a laptop, it will be MacBook Pro/Air.

Well you've already chosen, and I wasn't on humps lately, but I saw my friends Asus ultrabook (it was all aluminum casing, i5 in it, nvidia gpu) and it looked hot Very Happy

This so thin laptop idea is really great Very Happy Plus he got some leather case to hold it in, and since it came with w8 on it, and he's a hardcore linux guy, he said that he doesn't want w8 and they gave him back the money (I dk how much w8 goes for these days).

It cost somewhere around 1k € (probably little less)...
