So both US and Canada are going through an insane season of flu... Deaths are high compared to years before and the flu is all over the news. My mom aunt cousin and 3 best friends and tons of work buddies had it and now I got it and it's like I'm giving birth through my head. I hadn't been sick for couple years and going to work sick yesterday definitely didn't help. I'm sick enough that I'm actually contemplating booking off work... Having not taken an actual sick day for past 5 years...
Are you people over yonder in Europe also have this wave of flu? Is it like our flu but just more open minded cause it's European? Any home remedies?

We have the same seasonal flu, we're just not that hysterical about it.
I have gone through it a few weeks ago aswell, I can relate to the 'giving birth through the head' sentiment, the memory is still fresh in my mimd.

So who's coming over for a milk and honey rub down?
And I've never had a headache before so don't know what it feels like.

Yeah, no.
When someone gets the 'flu' they know it's the flu and not the cold.

i usually drink in the autumn self made juice/syrup from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippophae_rhamnoides and i don't get anything flu related in winter.
i'm usually getting flu for about 1 week in the spring (because of low temperature -> high temperature variations), and thats all.

The common cold is like scratching your arse versus a full blown flu which is more like your arse scratching you. Add to that the possibility of getting pneumonia from a proper flu, something that is less likely with a normal cold unless you have the immune system of an AIDS sufferer or if the RS-type is unusual for your immune system.
Flu:
In virus classification influenza viruses are RNA viruses that make up three of the five genera of the family Orthomyxoviridae:
Influenzavirus A
Influenzavirus B
Influenzavirus C
The one we keep getting yearly is type A (and that can cause pandemics) and is actually not a single virus but a series of variations:
The influenza A virus can be subdivided into different serotypes based on the antibody response to these viruses.[37] The serotypes that have been confirmed in humans, ordered by the number of known human pandemic deaths, are:
H1N1, which caused Spanish Flu in 1918, and Swine Flu in 2009
H2N2, which caused Asian Flu in 1957
H3N2, which caused Hong Kong Flu in 1968
H5N1, which caused Bird Flu in 2004
H7N7, which has unusual zoonotic potential
H1N2, endemic in humans, pigs and birds
H9N2
H7N2
H7N3
H10N7
Influenzavirus B
This genus has one species, influenza B virus. Influenza B almost exclusively infects humans and is less common than influenza A. The only other animals known to be susceptible to influenza B infection are the seal and the ferret. This type of influenza mutates at a rate 2–3 times slower than type A and consequently is less genetically diverse, with only one influenza B serotype. As a result of this lack of antigenic diversity, a degree of immunity to influenza B is usually acquired at an early age. However, influenza B mutates enough that lasting immunity is not possible. This reduced rate of antigenic change, combined with its limited host range (inhibiting cross species antigenic shift), ensures that pandemics of influenza B do not occur.
Type C is unusual and no use to mention it here...
Now for the Common cold...
The common cold (also known as nasopharyngitis, rhinopharyngitis, acute coryza, or a cold) is a viral infectious disease of the upper respiratory tract which affects primarily the nose. Symptoms include coughing, sore throat, runny nose, and fever which usually resolve in seven to ten days, with some symptoms lasting up to three weeks. Well over 200 viruses are implicated in the cause of the common cold; the rhinoviruses are the most common.
It's a completely different set of viruses that cause common cold and have different properties than Influenza viruses.
Being cold in itself doesn't make you ill, viruses and bacteria aren't transmitted by snow flakes or ice crystals. However, when your body and extremities become cold, your immune system becomes weaker since the body has to work harder to keep warm, affecting the internal energy resources. Viruses and bacteria take advantage of a lowered immune system, thrive at certain body temps etc..
Quote: | Prognosis
The common cold is generally mild and self-limiting with most symptoms generally improving in a week. Severe complications, if they occur, are usually in the very old, the very young or those who are immunosuppressed. Secondary bacterial infections may occur resulting in sinusitis, pharyngitis, or an ear infection. It is estimated that sinusitis occurs in 8% and an ear infection in 30% of cases. |
The only proven substance/combination that helps against cold is zinc acetate in lozenges.

Yeah just keep popping ibuprofen until it goes away.
I was lucky and didn't get flu this year, although I usually do so I'm still waiting for that wonderful moment.
I had salmonella from some bad eggs earlier this year, and also managed to get strep throat due to weekend immune system at the same time. Now THAT feels bad. Over two weeks of absolute misery.

Its been crazy this year in Calgary. Everyone i know has had it, or is sick. I have not had the flu in close to 10 years. I got it this year, and it was the sickest Ive been in a long time.
I personally have never seen the flu outbreak so bad in Calgary.

I'm the latest victim of this season's flu. Mother. Fucker. I've been running a 103 temp for the last 24 hours and it feels like my spine is trying to escape with my kidneys. My legs hurt, my shoulder hurts, AND I have to go to work today. Being the boss is a good thing, most of the time...
At least I get to have hallucinations and still pass a drug test!
Also, the onion thing only works if you eat them raw...or so I've heard. Lucky for me I loves me some onion and cheese sandwiches on wheat bread. I ate one for breakfast and I'm taking one to work for lunch.
And, one more thing, TamiFlu can suck my asshole. I took that shit on Monday and I'm still running a fever. Well, I think that the fever is breaking as I'm sweating my balls off. It's either that or the fact that I raped sixteen homeless people in my sleep over the last week and I think that the police are on to me. The good thing is that I, at least, had the forethought to go ahead and dump the bodies in the old rock quarry up by Larry's Peak. And that old crate that my Uncle Henry dumped up there back in the eighties is probably still down there. That thing'll certainly take care of the bodies. I hope. If it hasn't, the police have certainly found the bodies and are probably on to me by now. I've got to get out of here. The walls are closing in. This mirror is mocking my attempts at sanity. The teddy bear is made out of plaster. Fuzzy can not be master. Not. Ever.
Spoiler: |
Watch this before going to bed with a fever. Trust me, it'll be awesome. |

All "remedies" like TamiFlu etc. are just plain bullshit. There's no cure for virus infections unless you use strong anti-viral agents which they don't give for common flu. The only thing that might help when your viral infection has caused a secondary bacterial infection (pneumonia) is to take a certain zinc lozenge, but even that's debatable.
The only thing you can do is make sure your body is hydrated and that you sleep as much as possible. Tea/warm milk with honey will help alleviate some of the throat symptoms, and you can use painkillers to lower the fever and reduce the aches and pains, but there's no cure. You can stuff yourself with as many multivitamins you want, you won't shorten the period of illness (scientifically proven). Only that zink acetate thing could shorten the period by a day or two in certain tests.

I've been using a humidifier all winter as the humidity in my house has been ~15% and I have several guitars and that requires a nominal 35% to keep them from cracking and buckling. I haven't had any real throat problems, just the aches, diarrhea, vomiting, and feverish dreams/nightmares.
A few years ago, I got the swine flu and it was much, much worse than this. Then, last year, I got the flu and it was much, much worse than when I had swine flu. I work with the public and I have a gigantic bottle of Germ-X on my desk so as to keep my hands clean. These last few years have been a nightmare with me getting sick. Last year was the first time in ten years that I had to take a sick day. I haven't taken any yet this round, but I'm not certain if I'll make it through the week without taking one...
The important thing is that I'm drinking plenty of gatorade and eating lots of protein (thanks Ixi! ) so I'm certain that I'll be right as white (did I say that correctly?!?) soon enough. I just gotta stop sexing up the homeless and I'll be juuuuuussssst fine.
