i just had to sign up here to ask it.
and honest answers. no-one here knows each other personally (almost no-one).
by nerd i mean some nolifer who spends his free time sitting behind a computer playing games, doing some other useless stuff and not being social.
i spend a lot of time behind my pc due to work, but the moment i get home, i hate to even look at my box. i mostly use it for movies nowadays anyway.

I would bet that every forum member here would be viewed as a nerd by most of the population.
There are two kinds of people I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.

Going by the common perception of a nerd - I'm not a good fit for this particular category.
I'm reasonably attractive (at least when I'm in shape - which I'm soon to be again) and I have a decent (if not amazing) social circle.
That said, I do tend to isolate myself more than many - by choice. I'm usually comfortable by myself - and though I need social interaction like everyone else, I can go for days without it - and not have it be a problem. But as I get older (36 now) - I've found that it's getting harder to be alone.
I'm between relationships (hopefully, anyway) - and for the first time in my life I'm starting to feel lonely. I do have friends and I could easily be more social and outgoing - but it's really not friends that I'm longing for.
It's good old fashion love
But these past 10 years or so, I've found I've steadily lost interest in gaming (which was always my favorite passtime, at least alone) - and though I'm still a gamer, I just don't have the passion for it that I did when I was younger.
So, no, I'm not a nerd in the classical sense - though I'm sure some people might think of me as one. I'm not really what you'd consider an academic or a generally intellectually curious person - though I have some aspects that resemble those things. I'm mostly very, very pragmatic.

I spend more than 10h a day infront of a PC. Work and after that at home. I go out 1-2 nights a week. Try to go 2-3 times a week to the pool. 1 in 3 weekends I'm out of town roaming around. That's my life, and I consider myself somewhat of a nerd.

Define nerd?
Depends who you are around with.
Put me together with a bunch of models and I probably will be the nerd.
Put me together with some star wars freaks and I will be the cool guy.
I am in front of the computer 8-10h a day. But I have never seen star wars, harry potter, lord of the rings, start trek and what crap is there all out there? I can code in Perl, C, Java etc, but i don't read comic books. I am not the prettiest guy of the room, but i've had constant shagging for the past 15 years. I am not Mr. Fitness, but i do sport ~ 3x a week and spend most of the summer in the Alps climbing etc.
I am not super social, but I can go to a party with 100 random people and have a fun evening and meet a gazillion new people. I probably will not get in touch again, because i just don't give a lot about other people. I have some close friends and that's enough for me. I am not going to put myself under stress and time pressure to keep up with a lot of friends like some people i know 'I don't want to see him/her, but i have to keep the friendship going'. blabbalabla.

Then there are also geeks who share similarities with nerds. In general they are more cool and sophisticated.

Yeah, thats the definition of being a nerd |
No that's the definition of being a hipster.
I got a bunch of pop culture shit in my head. Know some shit about games. Know some shit about music. But not really enthusiastic about any of them. So not really a nerd. More like a geek.

No sir, that is not.
More and more nerds today are 'hispters' the real nerds are good nerds. not the stereotypical nerd with suspenders and thick framed glasses and pens in their shirt pockets. Todays nerd isn't what yesterdays nerd was. and hispters are todays nerds. because fuck logic.
actual nerds are really enthusiastic about their passions. that's all you really need to be a nerd. to really love what you're enjoying. comics, games, movies, science, etc etc etc. the passion for it is great. you don't have no know every single thing about star trek to be a nerd... you just have to love it enough to be a devoted fan. the crazy nerds are a different story. but even then they aren't the stereotypical nerd either. and their love for something is just so much greater that it has become a lifestyle rather than a life long hobby.
as long as your love for your passion is strong, you is a nerd. simples. anyone can learn the mythology of any fanboy bull shit. but not everyone can have the amount of respect / love for any particular subject matter that many nerds do.

In the past it was considered nerdy to play PC games and spend time on the internet, but it's more socially acceptable now so I voted no. When I think of a true nerd I imagine a person who collects comic books and toys, watches anime and is maybe socially awkward.

so then yes? pretty much everyone here is socially awkward to some extent. it all really depends on what's socially acceptable today. it's ok to talk about sex and blowing your boyfriends in public, it's ok to talk about doing drugs, smoking, drinking in public which is something that really wasn't accepted back then. talking about games in public is still sort of socially unacceptable. it's fucking pathetic.
rape / drugs / underage sex / alcohol abuse / parental abuse / all sorts of vulgarity / all sorts of nuisance is a o k ... but talking about games .... lololololoner loser nerd!

When I say socially awkward I'm not talking about subject matter in conversations. More like people who don't know how to conduct themselves in public and have poor hygiene.
