Per this thread: http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=69324&start=1440 after insisting we cannot judge the relevancy of a company/artist/media by our personal preferences but rather than the "public's opinion" LeoNatan has likened Valve's relevancy to that of Michael Bay or the "Twilight flick series".
So I ask you hump, is Valve relevant today? Yes? No?

The results of this poll are irrelevant. Ask how much Gears of War or Halo are relevant in the console section, I'm sure they will be 100% relevant.

I searched Halo and find more threads. I guess it is more relevant.

I feel like this is the same cycle as before.
The wait for HL2 was painful and long, and people wrote Valve off HARD last time. Then HL2 came out to glowing reception.
It's gonna' be that way again when HL decides to resurface.

for me valve is relevant now in digital distribution, and that's all.
i finished hl 1 and expansion lots of time.
i finished hl2 and extra's one time. (some 2 times, but not all)
played countless of hours in cs when i was young. cs original. not the rest of.
skipped dod. not my taste.
portal nice game, lots of fun. i played lots of times.
portal 2 i almost skip it. struggled to finish. dint touch it again after the finish.
left 4 death : hated both.
team fortress i play from time to time, not a big fan, but hell, at least i'm still playing.
dota 2 : leaving community aside, dota 1 for me is a way better game. i dont like the pace of it. dota 1/hon ..... dota 2 is my enjoyable order.
if you want me to play something valve, i would gladly play hl1/portal1/cs original instead of the newest and supposedly improved titles.

As a game developer Valve stopped being relevant to me with the release of L4D2, which was a big middle finger to the whole L4D1 community and fans in general. They decided to cash in on the popularity the way they milk TF2 with new hats. I guess there was something wrong with Valve for some time now. I think there were major changes in the studio after the failure with delivering episodic content on schedule.
There was an interview with Viktor Antonov a couple of months before the release of Dishonored and he was talking about the reasons why he left Valve. Basically he explained he wanted to work on big AAA projects, which apparently was not the case at the time.
The fact they left their biggest project on a cliffhanger for half a decade is enough to drop some points from their reputation. Currently if they even have plans for the release of HL3 it would be really underwhelming, if they don't make massive gameplay improvements in the genre. I don't think anyone would like to see another DNF.

How you even say that the pace is exactly the samel it's a 1:1 copy gameplay-wise, save for some bugs/intended changes

That makes them as relevant as Michael Bay is to movie watching - zilch.

Who exactly tries to "copy" Bay's films? What is there to copy that you can't come up with on your own? When was the last time you saw a movie and somebody said "ohhh they made it like Bay does"? His relevance is strictly in making commercially successful movies, I don't think any filmmaker, from the top to the worst is influenced by them.

Valve is not relevant one bit these days if you ask me.
After their success with Steam they got lazy, they don't have to make new games to keep a steady stream of income.

They're only relevant when it comes to Steam. And I get the feeling Steam Box isn't going to be much of a success.

What type of question is this? All you have to do is consider the summer/winter sales to be able to answer yes. Geez!

Sure sure, they don't make new games anymore and those they make like suck so bad nobody buys them. Thank God for Steam or they would be dead!

That's an 8+ M franchise excluding Steam sales of P1.

Quote: | "So last tax year Valve paid me $88000. About half of that was in the initial month. The graph of money over time would probably look like an exponential decay that has levelled off to around a constant $2000 per month. I completely agree with what you're thinking right now... absolute madness. To me the whole thing still seems very surreal. While before we were by no means going hungry, when I was going to get paid next was always a concern."
Valve have confirmed to us (in an interview that will appear soon) that they give the community developers a 25% cut of the profits, which means in one year Will's items went for a total of $352,000 in one year. To Valve cashflow like that means they get the freedom to carry on experimenting with one of their biggest properties, but it means something a lot more personal to Will. |
That's a more successful portfolio than a great number of developers! And yes it's post-Steam.
Oh.
Well. Then I'm sure hiring Doug Church, Michael Abrash, Clint Hocking, IceFrog and Eul was to help with the faster processing of Steam support tickets!
They hired 4 great game designers (System Shock, Ultima, Splinter Cell, DotA) and one of the greatest programmers (currently working on fucking virtual reality) to guess what, work on games.
