U.S. Statistics reveal that the United States holds 25% of the world’s prison population, but only 5% of the world’s people.

Which is normal since the US is a country full of immigrants.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

I guess the number of prisoners isn't as relevant as the reason why they are locked up. What are the most common crimes in the US?

I see what you did there...

But anyway US will reform sooner or later. Texas of all places has got the ball rolling with investing more in sending people to rehab than jail and so they actually have lowered crime rates, incarceration rates and cost to the state. In Canada though we going backward with more mandatory sentences
