|
 |
So, I want to buy one for my girlfriend as a birthday present. She didn't have any smartphones until now but she really liked the look and feel of my vanilla ICS-powered Nexus S. (there's vanilla ICS ROM's for the G300).
I thought about this, it's 30 euros with a subscription of 15 euros per month(which she will probably pay as she wants to get a subscription anyway).
The device sports a 4" IPS-LCD, Gorilla glass covered display, a 5mp camera with flash, 1 GHz Cortex-A5 CPU, 512MB of RAm and an Adreno 200(this is probably the lowest point. The chipset isn't a proprietary one as is the case with the Ascend Quad, but rather a Snapdragon).
Any thoughts about it? All the reviews I've read praise the build quality and overall offer of features but I still have my doubts, Huawei is a newcomer on the smpartphone market and almost everyone I know (most of my friends work in the mobile phone domain) keeps laughing at the device simply because it's a Huawei.
Any opinions on it? I'd love to hear them so don't leave me hangin' !

Looks good for the price, if you can get ICS/JB on it go for it.

There's already a vanilla ICS ROM floating about, people saying it works like a charm and there's CM9 support for it, I THINK.
Will buy it asap, went into a Vodafone shop today and toyed around with it for a bit, it was VERY responsive and they had GTA3 on it, it ran as it did on my Nexus S, which is great.

I've been selling huawei devices (smartphones and mobile internet modems) for a while now and while the name is indeed pretty unknown compared to other manufacturers, the devices are good and offer a great performance/price ratio.
the price you mentioned seems good. with ics/jb it should be super smooth even if the hardware isn't the latest.

Huawei just released a 4.0.4 ROM, so I guess there's no need to install CM9 on it.
Now I only need to find a guide on how to install it.
By the way, for those interested in a cheap, relatively powerful Android device, this is the best you can get for your buck. The screen is VERY responsive, the battery lasts somewhere around two days with Internet navigation and ~1 hour of talk. It can run GTA3 without any hitches and should I even mention the awesome build quality? It feels like an HTC One S, I shit you not.

It's an update.app file which needs to be copied to an SD card and simply be ran from there. So it's a little like Sony Erricson's method, except not as idiotic.
Oh and the update only works for these firmwares.
The following versions can be upgraded.
U8815V100R001C00B915
U8815V100R001C00B916
U8815V100R001C00B918
U8815V100R001C00B929
U8815V100R001C00B933
It can be updated like this:
At the home screen, tap the options button, a menu should appear. Select System settings>Storage settings/Storage> Software upgrade> SD Card upgrade> Confirm.
There's also an option to back-up your data, via Google's cloud services, I suppose.
After those steps have been done, an update bar appears and you know from there on out.
For all intents and purposes, the ICS present here looks exactly like the ICS present in Nexus S/Galaxy Nexus. It's VERY smooth and there doesn't seem to be a lot of bloatware around,. There's also some cute widgets and stuff, the most notable being the proprietary clock widget which looks as great as the one present on HTC's.
Here's the download link for the ones interested. There's also a manual included.
http://www.huaweidevice.com/worldwide/downloadCenter.do?method=toDownloadFile&flay=software&softid=NDY1MTg=
As a side note, the phone costs 189 euros unlocked. That's pretty awesome, considering the device is more than capable and the build quality is at the very least, steps above the Galaxy S1 and it feels even better than my Nexus S when held.

Finally got around flashing a proper ICS ROM on it. It required root access as silly Vodafone released an OTA update which soft bricked the phone, it kept hanging at the splash screen.
If anyone is getting this and needs directions, I am more than willing to provide them.
Pro-tip: if you find this for a good price UNLOCKED (free of Vodafone's silly updates), go for that, as opposed to something locked in Vodafone.
Notes: The stock ICS ROM found on Huawei's site runs much better than the Gingerbread which came with the device (however, it's so full of bloatware, it pains to see the app drawer). Screen responsiveness is improved, however, I found out in the mean time the screen only supports two simultaneous touches, I was directed towards something more expensive than this for more than 2. It's much faster in any other department and the traffic limit is reached much harder (Vodafone's GB was eating lots of MB's just for lulz, a move of their own, I suspect).
Stay away from the B926 ROM, that one needs root access so that one may install Google Play (which is not pre-installed), and altogether, that version was cooked as a functionality demo, as opposed to a full-fledged release. You may still need it, however, so that the baseband version changes to the latest...or whatever.

If everything goes well with the web site I'm working on, I plan to get this phone ^^ It really looks like the best price/performance smartphone
I hope they will enable ICS on all the devices...
So, what's the impressions on this phone from your gf?

Had it for a few days as well, installed official ICS on it and it works really well. However, the memory management is really shit, something which bothers me, she doesn't use it as extensively as I do. The screen however, behaves really great, although it only has support for two fingers, not 4 like higher budget phones (because of this, Angry Birds needs a little more care when pointing a bird). The colors look better than say...an HTC Sensation tho, IPS isn't there without a reason. Don't expect running Dead Trigger or Shadowgun on it, for example, it runs bad (it's only an Adreno 200).
She's using it mainly for phone calls, text messages, listening to music and playing tower defense games and the likes (Bad Piggies, Fruit Ninja, etc).
The 3G works awesome, however, Chrome has some issues with autocomplete when inputting a web address.
I recommend it, it's a great alternative to..say...a Galaxy Gio or something along those lines as it is of the same price but much better, hardware wise. Jelly Bean support is on the way as well, Project Butter should smooth any menu flow problems. If I'd lose my Nexus, I'd probably get this or Nexus S(Nexus S sells at the same price as this, although not new).
As a final note, the ICS on the G300 has the default ICS launcher (the one seen on Nexus S/Nexus).
If you need further help regarding this particular phone(such as how to install ICS, root, unlock bootloader, etc) feel free to post here or contact me privately.
EDIT: There are also some issues with the SD card. When mounted on the PC, upon unmounting, the ringtone is reset to Default, and any playlists containing songs from the SD card are reset. This is a common Android bug though. Especially seen on lower end phones.

Well I'd use it for text/phone and occasional facebook time The only games I'd play would be sudoku and chess on it, so the graphics part is not a concern
Thanks for the info ^^ I was looking a bit at a reviews and all of them are pretty much great

Yeah, it's seriously overpowered for its price range.

There's a stable ICS release. It's installed on the phone we're having.
However, there are really complicated steps to installing and you lose the warranty in the process.
Glad you're enjoying it.
You will be pleasantly surprised at close night photos. Or photos taken in a club. However, the exposure is pretty high so if the subjects don't stand still, it's blurry as hell...but when they do...man, the pictures are great.

I got the official ICS update, this is so different than Gingerbread, it will take me some time to adjust :\
But it's nice and sleek I guess.
And even tho I made backup, I still need to input all the info about accounts back, and I see that it messed up my contacts, again, plus it didn't pull the fb info this time :\

So, we installed CM10 on it a few days ago and it behaves MUCH better than it would with the official ICS ROM. It doesn't need periodical restarts and so on. She will probably be rid of it soon, tho, I will give her my Nexus S once I get the Nexus 4 (if it'll ever happen, lol).
