I ended up buying a different 2nd hand PS3, which also had a 3.55 CFW. I was able to update it to a 4.31 CFW (Rogero 4.30 v2.03).
The buying itself could have gone smoother, but in the end things worked out, unlike previous attempts at a deal with other sellers.

So, yeah... please bear with me, because I have more noob questions:
1. The PS3 in question is a 320GB slim model. The seller claims it has a 3.55 FW. And if it really is so, it means a CFW can be installed right?
2. And it's easily done with nothing else than a USB pen and few files when no downgrade is required, correct?
3. The CFW allows me indeed to play games I can download from the Internet?
4. Can I play virtually all past and current games with an updated CFW?
5. With a CFW installed, I lose access to the PSN and therefore access to online gaming and any other activity where Internet is required, correct?
6. How can I then update my games or download the DLCs? Is there any alternative to either the PSN, or would I need to, if possible, download the patches and DLCs from the Internet, and install/apply them myself?
7. I imagine there's no alternative then for the online gaming? And if there is, I wouldn't be able to play with legit users, right?
8. Regarding the HDD, if I run out of space, can I just plug-in a normal external HDD, or will I have to buy an internal PS3 specific HDD? Or, I can just buy a normal HDD and replace the internal one, correct?
9. Is there anything more I should know, or that I should have asked?

I'm close to buy an used Xbox360 Elite 120GB, ready to play backups from the HDD for 100€. Assuming it to be in decent and working conditions, it is not a bad deal at all right?
And although most of my doubts have been answered here, I still would like to go over them again just to be sure:
1. Will the hack (JTAG/RGH) be possible to update easily?
2. Being the console hacked, will I be prevented from connecting to Xbox Live?
3. While being blocked from Live, can I still access the Internet? Or will all online capacities be off-limits?

Which is the best brand new console at this moment on where we can play pirated games without major effort?
The Wii? To be honest, this is the one I am more inclined to get. It's the cheapest, has a decent catalog of games, and is in all truth family fun. But is it still worth getting when the Wii U just came out?
The Xbox360? Since the new one would need to be physically hacked, I wouldn't want to mess with that. Unless there's a easier way around that is.
The PS3? I assume it would be needed to downgrade the firmware, am I right? And is it doable on the newest ones? And would I need a BR burner, or would a external HDD suffice?
Which of this three would be the easiest one to play pirated games? And please keep in mind that the console would be store bought, which means: new hardware and firmware.
If for some reason this post touches a touchy subject, please lock it and delete it away.

Ps3 is out of the question if you are buying a new one.
you cant downgrade the latest ones, and the ones you can downgrade need to have been on the firmware you want to downgrade too at some point the their lives, so good luck finding one of them.

Like I said I would wait for confirmation on that, its been a while since I read up on anything PS3 wise and a lot has changed.
Although with that being said I like the 360 more as a console, so if it were me i would get a 360.

Same here to be honest. The problem is just that: I believe the new ones need to be psychically hacked, and I don't think I would want to mess with that, after spending the money on it. But... it's still on consideration.
For Xbox there are 2 ways. First is to flash the DVD-Drive and burn backups to DL-DVDs(requires you to open the Xbox and put a cable to your PC). Second but the better way, would be to put a Chip into the Xbox, you could play arcade/isos/DLCs etc from an external harddrive.
you can ask the modder if you can get a dual nand chip, so you could still use xbox live with orginal games.
Wi can be easy soft-modded meaning you just need a SD-card and or USB-external harddrive. 1 Hour work max.

I'd say x360 and RGH that mother efer; depending on where you live, you can send it to a modder for all the dirty work. And you can get a Kinect witch is close to the Wii family fun idea; Happy Action Theater is insanely addictive for kids (and grwonups) and both kinect sports games are really fun as well (they work good with the kinect too).
But I'd probably recommend the Wii, because it's cheap and it's pretty much done with (Nintendo are not going to bother to update the fw and block softmods from now on). And you have some nice Nintendo games on that too, if you get bored of the sports/party games.
Yeah, if you're not getting one for harcore games, the wii is you obvious and cheapest choice.
And I forgot to say, but with my budget being a (very, very) limited one, chips and stuff, would probably blow it out of the water. It would need to be something that I could do, for free at home.
That's also one of the reasons why I am favoring the Wii. Sure, I would love to own a Xbox360, but on top of it being the more costly of the three, having to to spend even more money to make it pirate friendly, it's sadly a no-go for me.

Nah, you can downgrade any old ps3 (ones manufactured before ~march 2011 or so) to 3.55 even though they were never on 3.55. You do need a flasher though as you stated.
And to return to the OP, I wouldn't advise a vanilla Wii, as deelix said, you can play most of its games on PC these days, and the console prolly will hardly have any support considering the Wii U is out now.
I think out of all 3, the 360 is the best solution, with the RGH hack. Yes you do need to use extra hardware, but surely you can find somebody to do it for $90, shouldn't be that impossible. Although, I m not sure brand new 360 can be RGH if you are on the latest kernel, but correct me if i'm wrong, I'm kinda out of the loop. You should definitely google this.
Finally, the PS3 is still the cheaper alternative if you can find a model already on 3.55, that way you can hack it for 0€. Although, I guess if you find one on 3.55, they would make you pay the extra price (most people that dont have a clue about its value ,already updated ). That, or you get one that was updated, and downgrade with with hardware (again, many people do it, shouldn't be more than $50).
So yeah basically at this point, when all these 3 consoles are ending their reign, I would suggest to buy one 2nd hand, already hacked if possible... Just make sure you buy a Slim PS3 so it doesnt YLOD, or a Jasper FAT or slim 360, so it doesnt RROD.
Buying a brand new console won't do you anything good... I think the Wii is a waste of money although I think it's the only one that can be hacked soft mode out of the box...
PS : I read that you are short on money, so instead of spending the extra money to have it brand new, I would suggest to use it to hack your 2nd console.

@cheat2win : as long as they are a slim ps3 (not the first model though, the 120GB one, i dont remember the exact references, sometimes have PSU issues, but that's rare) or Jasper 360/Slim XBOX360 (just ask the shop), 2nd hand shouldn't matter, as long as the people who had them didn't play football with them.
Their hardware is top notch and 2nd hand or not shouldn't matter. Do this, you won't regret it !
You dont need internal HDD, just use a 750-1000GB external HDD
200€ brandnew slim with RGH-Hack, 230€ with dual nand. 100€ for jtag second hand.
So if the internal HDD doesn't matter, wouldn't it be better (cheaper) to buy the Premium instead of the Elite?
And once again showing how much of a noob I really am regarding this generation consoles, what's the difference between a flashed firmware and JTAG?

I just Googled a bit more, and the JTAG it's the thing that enables us to run the games from the HDD, right? A flashed firmware only enables us to run burned games.
So of the two I mentioned, the Elite would be the one to choose, since it's already JTAG'd. I guess I could JTAG the other, but since I would to need to build up cables for it, I think I'll pass.

Would look out for one with RGH its a little bit better since you dont need to delete $systemfiles in every Game Folder, JTAG is faster on booting, RGH needs in average 30 seconds but you can use dual/tripple nand.
But you should know that with a JTAG/RGH xbox360, you cannot go to xbox live, even if you pay a subscription you will be banned.

But overall if you don't care for online play, you should go for the JTAG/RGH route, otherwise, if you are really fond of online and wanna run games from hdd without having to burn them, your only solution is to get a hacked PS3
In a silly way he says games are less hassle to get working. You don't need to burn the games on discs and don't have to worry when you have your last disc in case the game in the end is not worth it.
The live thing though. Just forget about online if you want a JTAG/RGH. Perhaps you already know this, just saying.

PS3 is no solution. Unless things have changed they are banning people now.
And all in all, the PS3 is not worth it compared to the 2 others. Worse GFX and worse performance in most titles. Got some amazing exclusives, but that's about it.
Oh, I have no desire to go online, specially on the Xbox since I have no idea to pay for a subscription.
Basically, what I want is: a console in which I can play pirated games without any effort whatsoever.
Anyway, I contacted a seller. If it's cheap enough, I might buy it right away. If he tries to bargain too much for it, I'm already thinking on placing my desire to buy a console on the shelf since it's nothing I'm dying to have.
And if the kids really push me to buy one, I'll just go with a Wii. The Wii U only if there was a way to play pirated games, and if it was easy to make it so.
360 definitely. You get the best console in terms of performance and gfx, effort less "installment" of games and it's also hassle free to get dlcs working.
