Is anyone here any good at it?

I can sketch out my ideas pretty nicely, but I can't colour them in (unless I use a sort of flat vector palette). I'd love to be able to do it, especially in Photoshop, though I'm sure I could get used to doing it in other programs.

I'm interested in where I look to get started, specifically for backdrops that I want to use in game creation.

Any help is really appreciated, I can even pay someone for their time if they're interested in teaching via Skype or something, thanks

Try this for a starter:

http://ctrlpaint.com/library/

He has some good and simple tutorials.
You can steal some tuts from Massive Black and Gnomon Workshop or Digital-Tutors.

Also read a few books on color theory, light reflection on different surfaces etc.

I would wish to help more but I'm lazy slacker who always finds some excuses to not draw or paint.

EDIT:

And this is pretty good too:

http://www.floobynooby.com/ICG/artvalues.html

and there is always conceptart.org forums:

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/photoshop/107217-digital-painting-ps-2-a.html

I'd also be interested in digital shading techniques.

Will take a look at ctrlpaint, but more tuts are welcome Smile

My friend who works as graphics designer in some games studio usually spends around 30-40 hours per digital painting.

Also it is pretty good for a first (?) painting.

Why Stalker? Also I like it! The grass looks not so good (because one can see the repeating brushes) and the tree in the foreground could use a bit more contrast Smile

Actually the more distant from the first plane things are the less saturated they should be.

Hmm... nice page... but short...

I was replying more to Pumpy about saturation.
Are you doing it for yourself or do you have some deadline? Maybe outsource it to some Chinese fella, there should be 100,000 talented Asians for one Caucasian anyway Smile

But jokes aside you probably won't do it any faster without any practice. Having ready a color palette (like from reference photos) will definetely speed things up. Some brushes for texture but otherwise it is hard work.

I know about the saturation, but the tree looked flat, that's why I suggested adding some contrast Smile (meaning, deeper blacks and a bit more shading to give it depth)

Nevermind that the angle/perspective on the laptop is all wrong Laughing

But with that it's a lot easier as you have a whole predefined image to work from.

She's completely scalable by the way (mostly vector), painted in Photoshop. All the shapes scale upwards and the blurry/shadows remain as is at any size.

turned out great I remember doing that tutorial somewhere before.

Why don't you create simplistic chars (that are easy to animate) for the game and only use these painted closeups for dialogue? You should really save yourself the trouble because it is really really tiring Sad

Thanks, guys! The game and art are actually based on real-life locations that were begging to have a creepy story to be made about them
