As the title says, what antivirus/antispyware/firewall setup do you recommend for windows 8?

I'd say Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes.

If you pay a little care what you install you don't really need an antivirus. Personally I can't stand the slowdown that comes with real-time protection. Works for me at least, haven't used one for about a decade.

Yep, no realtime antivirus needed, I go with Comodo Firewall with its Defence+ enabled and set to "proactive"

Considering that MSE didn't detect the only virus that I've had in the last 10 years..well there's definitely some truth in that xD

windows 8 has mse built in so you don't need anything. Maybe malwarebytes to check from time to time.
And the best of all, Common Sense Pro 2012.

MSE and NOD are very light and even Norton, which was a resource hog some years ago, seems to be headed that way fast. It's all about being as unintrusive as possible now.

Because, like already said, it is built in to Windows 8 and Win 8 will tell you that when you try and install it.

I used to like that, but every trojan author targets it first it seems. I've seen it get pwnt on friends' and clients' PCs a lot of times.
I now call it Microsoft Placebo Essentials |
All AVs are bypassed with relative ease by malware writers, as no AV are preventing 0day exploits. MSE is no worse than any others, very lightweight on resources and are quick to update their virus and spyware definitions once something is found in the wild. Rely on common sense more than an AV of course |
Viruses are getting too smart for our puny amateurish defenses :<

They began releasing them when the OS went RTM, various additions (Which I don't have installed.) and a lot of hotfixes, many now superseded by all-in-one larger fixes.
http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/35675-Windows-8-Hotfix-Repository
(This is exactly the same as for Windows 7 currently post SP1 there's nearly 1200 hotfixes available if you were to install every one of them although Windows Update itself will likely only find two to three hundred on a new SP1 install at most, rest is a bundle of security and fixes for specific programs, configurations and such although I'd still recommend keeping fully up to date.)
For Windows 8 there's also a much simpler way to remove superseded hotfixes.
