Had a lot of fun for a year on one... had to move toward a car eventually though. ;p It's a lot of fun to just riiiiiiiiiiiide. Enjoy it man. 
I think I had a 1986 Honda Rebel or something, lol.

An old 4 cylinder bike around 250-400cc is the best bike for a newbie.
They have almost exclusively excellent handling - perfect for a new driver.
Also they are cheap to maintain, and if you drop them, the damage is easily fixed.
The carburetors require some bit of more maintenance. Like every six months it's good to go get them calibrated.
Also once you buy it, it's a good idea to put on some crash bars/protectors on it.

P.S: another good thing to put on, is a oil dropper for the chain - no need to stop every 500-1000km and make yourself full in oil, by cleaning the chain and applying new oil - just replace the oil canister of the dropper and you're good for another 2000-4000km - probably enough for each engine oil cycle.

My buddie had a honda CB and that thing was bullet proof. There a good bike. Im a sport bike guy myself. I really miss my CBR1000RR. Think i might try and find a good used RC51 for next year.

Shit man, in Bulgaria every 2-nd driver has bought his driving's license, with no exam or course whatsoever. City driving a bike is scary stuff. Also there are bikers that go 200km/h in small city streets, and driver's rage, and people often don't give right of passage.
So I drive in the city only exclusively to get out of it.
And almost all motorcycles drive with high beams in city limits.
