You guys helped me earlier in finding some good games, so giving this another whirl!
So after many many years of never touching the turn based strategy games, i got tired of the fast paced strategy games, and i wanted a game where i could spend a lot of time in a single game and getting the feeling of progressing, i finally tried Civilization V: Gods and Kings.
And i've really liked it so far, even though i'm apparently not good with the whole diplomacy part, everyone thinks i am a warmonger and apparently take pleasure in denouncing me I like seeing my empire grow and then slowly take over the whole world!
Strictly interested in single player games and i do enjoy the long games, i think the first game i completed was on like the 320th turn or something, i didn't really know what i was doing though.
I heard that Civ IV is considered much better than the initial release of Civ V, but Civ V: Gods and Kings fixed alot of the issues. So is it worth playing Civ IV or is there another game series that is recommended?

and then there is King's Bounty...
Playing Endless Space as well atm, it's pretty decent but lacking depth so far, hope that improves as the game goes on.

All civs are good, only downside to civ 5 (for me) is that AI is a bit dumb and too easy to beat. But I don't think it's worth going back to earlier civ just for that.
You're probably not going to find a much better TBS than Civ. It's well implemented and has a lot of depth. So consider sticking with it before running off to a new game.
You might want to try some of these:
- Heroes of Might and Magic series - #3 if you don't mind older graphics, #5 or #6 if you do.
- Kings Bounty - There's no city building or expansions, but overall very similar to HoMM. If you liked HoMM you will like this. It's a fairly modern game with many expansions.
- Alpha Centauri - Very much like civilization, but in space. It's quite an old game however. If it wasn't so old I'd put it in first spot on this list.
Then there's two titles released this year:
- Warlock: Master of the Arcane - Civilization with less depth and magic. It's a fun game, but not for more than a match or two.
- Endless Space - Good game, but also lacking depth.
And I know there is Galactic Civilizations and Master of Orion series, but I haven't played much of either. From what I can tell they're pretty interesting.

That's a damn good reason to go back to IV, I'd say. Especially when you have mature mods like Fall from Heaven and RoM/C2C to add endless replay value.

Thanks guys, i have a little to go through now.
The Heroes games and the King's Bounty look very different from what i've played before, maybe it'll intrigue me. I've heard a lot of people talk about those games, but again i've never really paid attention to the TBS games, so always avoided them.
The Endless Space game does look quite nice, i shall definitely give that a whirl soon.

Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword (4x) - The base game with two expansions on top of it. It aged incredibly well, being fast and still presenting great graphics. Great mechanics, with only a few surpassed by "Civilization V", such as the "no unit stacking" and the hexagon playing field. There's a reason for it to maintain still a great user base, and a lot of mods, after this years and after the release of the next installment of the series.
Sid Meier's Civilization V: Gods & Kings (4x)- I haven't played the game with the expansion yet, but about the base game I can say this: great game, good improvements like the already mentioned "no unit stacking" and the hexagon playing field. I prefer "Civilization V" over "Civilization IV", but the major, major slow and torturing turns when approaching the final end game (XVIII century on the Marathon speed on the biggest map), are the deal breaker for me personally. I'll probably try the expansion later tonight to see what it gives to the game, and to see if there are any performance improvements, but I've already set my hopes very very low for it. Major personal disappointment: no Portugal, since it was included in "Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword". Anyway, for those with a high-end computer, capable of playing the late game without suffering the time it takes for ending a turn, I recommend this one.
Endless Space (4x) - I had high hopes for this one. Multiple races, multiple planet types, and the impression of indeed endless fun. But a cheating AI, broken mechanics and a somewhat confusing feeling of "what is this for?" and "why?" for half the game, and simply it being a very, very boring game made me forget it two days later after release day. The races while different, all share basically the same tech tree, and so there are not really a differentiation between them, and the unique techs are forgettable. The combat is also different, with it being some sort of card game. I for one always auto-resolved. I'm sure there are many praising the game, but let's face it, at least half of them are doing so because they bought it, but for me it was a big, big disappointment. I was really hyped and it sucked, plain and simple.
King's Bounty: The Legend (TBS-RPG) - Great game, big game, awesome game. Real-time world movement, turn-based combat. It's a mixture of RPG with TBS, being you have quests, recruit troops and explore the world on a third person view. There's also a sequel named "King's Bounty: Armored Princess", with is own expansion called "King's Bounty: Crossworlds". There's a bundle containing all three named "King's Bounty: Platinum Edition".
Heroes of Might and Magic V (TBS) - The are two expansions, but I won't elongate on this one because sincerely, I simply disliked it. From the turn-based world map movement, to the combat, after playing "King's Bounty: The Legend", I felt no appeal to it. There's also a sequel, "Heroes of Might and Magic VI".
Galactic Civilizations II: Endless Universe (TBS) - The base game with it's two expansions. Great game, big differentiation between races, enormous maps, various planets and big, different between races, tech tree. I guess someone could say it's Civilization on space, but there are different mechanics, and for what it worth, I prefer Civilization. There's no sense of advancing and evolving as in Civilization, and for me, ended up as boring and bland despite being really not. Tastes I guess.
Warlock: Master of the Arcane (4x) - Basically a Civilization V clone, but with a fantasy theme, that fails to deliver. It does do some things right, but after playing Civilization, it just does not hold up.
There are lot's more, but these are the one's I played.

Nice writeup cheat2win, cheers!
Yeah, the long turns definitely happens in Gods and Kings, i made the "mistake" of picking a Huge map, with a lot of civs and city states and now in the late game i just go do other stuff while the computer does it's stuff and while my computer is no where near top-end, it's definitely not a bad one.

If you liked the old Master of Magic, you should definitely try Fall from Heaven 2 + Fall Further. It's a very polished and deep fantasy mod for Civilization 4, and the gameplay is spectacular.
Now if only someone could do something similar for Civ 5...

And there's the Master of Mana mod (previously Wild Mana) as well, which is a continuation of sorts from Fall from Heaven. Worth checking out as well if you've had enough of FfH.

Hi,
The civilization series is by far the best turn based strategy game i have played. Both Civ4 with expansions and Civ5 with G&K are great.
Other turn based games that might interest you could be Europe Univasailes 3, Total War series.
I havent played these games myself, but are concidering it: Hears of Iron 3, Victoria 2, Crusader Kings II.

Disciples 1 and 2. Amazing atmosphere and art, the story is ok, but like I said, the art and atmosphere is one of the best I have seen.
Definitely play it!

Most of the above, but I'd add UFO Aftermath, Aftershock, and Afterlight.

Age of Wonders series.
Panzer Corps
5 Star General series ( Panzer General 1+2, Aliied General, Pacific General, People's General, Panzer General 3D Assault, Panzer General: Scorched Earth)
Fantasy Wars (and Fantasy General + the mini campaign, the game that inspired Fantasy Wars).
Elven Legacy (all)
The ORIGINAL KING's BOUNTY, if you can stomach the really old graphics and want to learn how the Heroes of Might and Magic series was born (yes, HOMM gameplay mechanics were born from this game, which was also developed by New World Computing).
Star Control 1+2 (available on GOG)
Battle Isle series (also available on GOG)
Alpha Centauri with Alien Crossfire expansion
Call to Power 2
Evil Genius
Conquest of the New World
Colonization
Probably i forgot a ton of them, but you have a mix of old and even older goodies.
