So my Vapor-X 5870 loveliness has failed me, with some oddly missing resistors by the PCI-E interface, locking the card into 1x mode Which is sad.

So I need a new card. I'm poor and so I must scour the depths of ebay in the hopes of a bargain.

And so I find myself with 2 cards to choose from; another 5870 with a Zalman cooler, or a 480.

I'm struggling to find the one I want... so I'll leave it for the combined wisdom of the Hump to sort it out for me Laughing

They both cost the same, so money isn't the issue.

(edit: I only wish I could afford a 5970...)

Statistically, the 5970 is a lot more powerful than the 480, even a standard 5870 seems to compete relatively closely.

Seems the 5870 is actually neck and neck with the 480 most of the time.

The one who recommends you a 480 is not your friend. The card simply gets too hot and drains too much power for that performance level.
Get a GTX 560 Ti, it's way more efficient in both thermals and consumption, and it's not much slower than 480.

I have considered that card, but it is currently out of my price range.

I have indeed read about the vast power consumption, and excessive heat too....

I still think you might be better off with the 5870, to be honest. The 560ti still loses out to the 5850 and, like you said, it's more expensive. Pay more for less performance? Though admittedly you'd have better driver support and the nV "niceties" such as PhysX if you went with the 560. I reckon this vote is going to be split grinhurt

Okay, my suggestion? 5870. It has more raw power and outperforms the 470 and 560ti in almost every title. It's pretty much equal with the 480/570 too, given how the 570 is pretty much on par with the 480 at the best of times.

mmm... I must admit... I had zero issues with my 5870.... and the power consumption is low... but it IS an AMD card, and I can't help wondering if the grass is greener on the nVidia side...

Now THAT's a better option Very Happy The 6970 is a lot more powerful.. and even if you can't flash, the 6950 is still a beast. I was actually on the fence about getting a 6950 instead of my 570, when I was talking to werelds about it.

Well it was all said above already, but the order in which you'd *want* to buy these cards is 6950 > 5870 > 560 Ti > 480.

Just forget about the 480 entirely. Even the 560 Ti would be a better buy than that, unless you got the 480 at half price Smile

If you can find a 470 for really cheap it may be worth it. The 470 easily overclocks enough to reach 480 performance levels.

Not really.

Ran mine for a year and half at 80% fan speed levels, and it never went much over 78c full tilt. That was with the reference cooler and overclocked to 777mhz. +177mhz to reference. The 470 overclocked to basically 770mhz runs on par with a 480 and really not any hotter.

My 110 degrees Celsius gtx 470 begs to differ about being not too hot

And I ran my 5870 for a year at 975 MHz (+125) without ever having to push it past 50% fan speed Smile

Same thing stands for the 470 as for the 480: unless you get it really, REALLY dirt cheap, it's just not a good buy, not with all the alternative options. One of which would once again be a 560 Ti - far superior to the 470 in every aspect other than performance, where it perfectly matches it.

Are you sure it's a first generation 6950?

Otherwise those "locked" clusters or what they were again have been removed and you won't be able to flash the card in that way, of course a 6950 is still a good GPU as is. Smile

Also doesn't the AMD 6000 series have this locked bios thing?

Locked BIOS in what way JB?

The 6000 series has dual BIOS's; one locked so you can always revert if a flash goes wrong.
