I remember the WW2 documentary with restored clips in color, but WW1, that's awesome. I would really like to know what technique they use.

If you watch the three stooges dvd's that show how they did color restoration for some of the video it is pretty simple to see how they did it. Just computers and time.

That picture, in essence, is all you need to see to tell you how horrible WW1 was, minus the gassings.

Go watch band of brothers, or saving private ryan. Not "real", but a damn near spot on representation of how horrible it was. I really wish a WW1 film would be made that captures how horrible the war was, just as saving private ryan does.

but saving and band of brothers are WW2...

and @ mrchart

I live close to where they fought ww1, behind the river "Ijzer" in belgium.
And we always went to see those remainings with school. And WW1 wasnt that horrible as ww2. Some servian guy gets killed, hungary and east get pissed. Germany wanted to kick france ass, our belgian king didnt let the .de army pass, .de declares war on belgium, uk is pissed, and fighting time. Biggest fronts were in the mud of ypres and passendale, seen those graves, fields and fields of white crosses. But it was tottally different to ww2.

They didnt have tanks, no airplanes.
Just a bunch of people dug in for years, throwing grenates at each other, and then the crowds used some mostard gas.
A lot died. And a smart ass Belgian dude flood the whole region, usa came, and kicked .de asses. Just took a long time because they were dug in.

And the occupation wasnt a cruel occupation. In WW2 hitler was fucked up and no one liked him and he didnt like anyone. In WW1 occupied people were treated ok, well at least here in belgium.

But i have to agree that the pics are nice.

*cough* First off, they did have tanks, and airplanes. Just not as technologically advance. Second off, chlorine and mustard gas is pretty fucking brutal stuff. WW2 was in no way as bad for how they actually fought the war.

they were world wars. who cares that one was more brutal then the other. the good thing is that they are over.
oh and in ww1 they didnt have tanks. only the americans had them at the end of the war.
have you been in one of the worldwars?
-no, then you should shutup and let people who were there tell you how it was.
- yes, then you wouldnt say this

Actually ... google raped my mom and killed my dad. He's no friend of mine.. and well ... your link had led me that much closer to him ...

Actually ... the WW1 pics mook more realistsic than the WW@ pics. Mchart, you're right: the shot up train pics from WW1 looks absolutely scary ... and I bet they didn't hide all the soldiers missing limbs like they do now ....

And on another note... I asked because my Grandfather (RIP) was in the Royal Airforce (England) stationed in North Africa during WWII.... Oh .. my grandmother was in the RAF too .... but never heard how bad it was ... I just bet I could impress some family showing them some great pics like these WW1 ones ... you know .... when it was the war to end all wars ....

my grandfather shot many pictures in Russia with his Agfa-color camera. He told me that it was very expensive but affordable at the time around '42. However many photos were lost because he had to flee from being shot or send to the gulak's in syberia because he was a dutchman and the russians killed nearly everyone who server in the waffenss. He drove an 8 tyre amored vehicle for peeking purposes and was captured half-frozen due to the cold near Moskau. He told me that his unit orgininally had 25 people. At the time he was captured ony a few of them were alive and many of his friends were frozen to death. When i spent some time at his home in my childhood he often cried out loud at night because of his nightmares. I didn't understood that because i was a child but later when i was about 16 he talked to us about what happened in the war. My Grandma lost 5 of 6 brothers, they were all killed at the russian front and my Grandpa stayed in germany since he was not welcome in his hometown behind the border anymore. He was fighting against communism and he admitted to me that he was blinded by the principles of power and purity of the waffenss. He's a nice man with a good heart and very humorous. He knows better than we what it takes to overcome the consequences of war.
I'll see if i can get some pictures from him, but i can't guarantee anything

nanana i saw it through 4 times nanana
band of brothers is about the second just so you know and this is a topic about the first one then how do you have to nerve to come here and start about the second one, i will tell the priest at your local church and he will lead the demons out (or chain you up in his cellar where he will insert a big stick into the place of evil and videotape it). hahaha i will have my revenge Surprised

@panoramix i'm sorry to hear that. i cant imagine what i would do if i saw my best and closest friends (or family) freeze to death hearing them scream or seeing them getting shot. it must have been terrible, no wonder he has nightmares. i'm really sorry for him Sad
