Focus Home Interactive is pleased to unveil the first images of Confrontation, the video game adaptation of the fantasy miniature wargame by Rackham. Developed exclusively for PC by Cyanide Studio (Blood Bowl & A Game of Thrones), Confrontation is an incredible real-time strategy game with the classic role playing elements that have made the series popular on a global scale.
The game is set in the fantastic and original universe of Confrontation, Aarklash. As the Age of Rag'narok is approaching, four factions are fighting for their own cause and struggling for domination over the land: the brutal Orcs of the Tree-Spirit, the ferocious Wolfen packs, the fearsome Griffon warriors or the terrifying creatures of the Scorpion.
With a core focus on strategy, Confrontation challenges players to lead a squad of elite soldiers, helping them evolve into a unit that is equal parts brain and brawn. Recruit, develop and equip your squadron and the powerful allies that fight by your side; establish new strategies to destroy your enemies! Careful management of your units, their powers and equipment, as well as clever use of your environment will get you through near-death situations and lead you to epic victory!

There's a Steam unlocked copy floating around those Chinese BBS warez boards, probably not all too useful yet but it means the files are available and it can get cracked easier.

It is the same protection used with Wargame:EE, ACT Control. It is licensed starforce. 5 activation limit and stuff like that.

A patch is out, unsure what it changes but it's likely a bit of everything judging by the files modified, I guess it's similar to the Blood Bowl patches which were rather extensive.

How's the game itself? Could you do a mini-review, please?

The missions are laid out fairly simple and assume you are totally new to these types of games so you get all sorts of hints although it's nothing in-depth (I assume the manual will help out a lot for knowing the finer mechanics of the game.) and it starts out explaining the current state of what's happening in this location (The "ragnarok" event.) with the unlockable art and codex entries filling out things as you progress.
Controls are quite straightforward and plays like a RTS/RPG or how to best describe it, each unit has a clearly defined role usually within one of four archetypes (I don't fully remember what it was again, something, something, tank, something but it's nothing too complex.) and mimics the gameplay of games such as Battleforge or Dawn of War 2 or what else to use, that Warcraft 3 mod where you just controlled the heroes is quite a fitting description.
The map so far is pretty barren with a sort of control point capture location in certain areas, you navigate your units through small groups of (sometimes patrolling.) enemies from one of four factions quite resembling the basic Warhammer or well probably many standard fantasy setups, anyway it's the factions of humans, orcs, wolves and a sort of undead/mechanical mix.
You play as the humans during the story mission against the mechanical / undead like armies so I don't know quite how each faction compares but the units in the army painter window seem pretty diverse albeit still within certain basic roles.
Each unit has a host of abilities and special skills you can call on, they can also level up and should they be knocked out any surviving unit can revive but that takes time, also there's buff item like bandages to help heal you and other caches, can usually also swap between two weapon sets normally that's ranged or melee but it varies and not every unit can switch like that.
Combat gets chaotic fairly fast with multiple units under you command but you can pause the game and give orders that way to manage things a bit better, using the units you have correctly and their abilities at the right time seems to be the overall core strategy required, not quite as critical as say in Myth or what to give as a further example though.
(Dota?)
So far the desert location the game starts in is pretty barren but there's other locations as well, world is pretty big and split into several regions according to the intro movie but this might not matter much though you'll fight all factions eventually or so it seems.
I think the game isn't too demanding but the visuals are also a bit dated, sound is pretty sparse too and the intro movie is very low-res though that matters little, don't know about multiplayer so far but I imagine it's fairly straightforward too but I don't know what modes or rules are available.
Eh basically during the SP missions you advance over a medium sized map with your squad and fight encountered enemies while capturing strategic locations (Or well, location.) advancing in levels and unlocking new database entries and furthering the campaign, it's pretty simple but I'm not too good at explaining it.
The game has potential but I'd check the official forums for more info and when or if they are added also check the Steam forums.
http://www.confrontation-thegame.com/forum/index.php
I'm probably missing something but it's a quite straightforward strategy game with some few RPG elements, not too many units but balance is probably better that way and they seem fairly unique albeit I assume it all does boil down to the four ground types that the game mentions very early on.
I don't think you ever control that many units either since they all have special abilities and uses but there's probably some form of army management involved.
(As to not just be four units each fitting a specific archetype class I mean.)
Not that many controls to learn either and not many options to adjust outside of editing the config xml file manually, unsure about technical specifications like FoV or multi monitor support as well.
(Or full 3D, AA seems unsupported outside of the in-game FXAA substitute.)
EDIT: The game isn't too bad and it's just starting out, feels a bit average (generic ?) so far though or how to best describe it, it's been done before albeit Cyanide Studios probably has some of their own elements mixed in which will appear later on.

Looks and sounds like DoW2 in a fantasy setting. No release or even demo out so far?
