  • Genre: Stealth-oriented real-time tactics
  • Developer: Pyro Studios
  • Publisher: Eidos Interactive
  • Year of inception: 1998

Quote:
The first installment in the "Commandos" series, the game was released in 1998 and is set in wartime Europe and Africa where a group of six Allied Commandos performs missions using small unit tactics. Each Commando has a unique set of skills and tools determined by his class which forces the player to establish cooperation among them so that further progress can be made. The objectives varies from sabotages to rescuing allied informants and assassinations.

Commandos employs an isometric view with a whole map visible, thus allowing player to think out a strategy and its execution in advance. The same system was later used in the expansion pack Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty released in 1999 as well as in two installments Commandos 2: Men of Courage and Commandos 3: Destination Berlin released in 2001 and 2003 respectively.

So there I was lying in my bed thinking about great old games that I could replay and boom Commandos came to my mind.
It has been so long since I ve played it that it will feel like a totally new game to me.
Great game with hard difficulty (as i remember at least)+pre rendered gfx so the game aged kinda well.

Too bad that the pyro studios didnt release anything else after 2007.

Anyways long story short BUY IT!!!
Why bring a gun to a gun fight if you just can knife em all in the faceeeeee

GOG IT:
Commandos1+Add-On
Commandos 2+3

The only game that topped Commandos BEL in every aspect was Commandos 2. No other game came close. Not desperados, not commandos 3, not sudden strike (i found it all too boring).

Very good game indeed.

Commandos Collection for less than $2 (Strike Force not included)

Be warned that the Steam forums report a lot of bugs on modern systems.

Managed to run this and the expansion on virtual Win98. I think it's the best way if they still haven't patched it for Win7.

Expansion adds 10 missions, great just like the original ones.

Also a similar game to Commandos is Robin Hood Legend of Sherwood, with you controlling the Merry Men instead of green berets Smile
A clone that's easily a 10/10 in my book, the isometric graphics are beautiful just like in Commandos and the story, gameplay are great. Also runs on Win 7 well I think.

These games should get opensourced goddamnit, for great justice. Imagine a map editor release for this, fixes for modern systems, modern multiplayer through steam etc.

These games were so tough, I remember a local magazine had a walkthrough, and it was 10 pages for half the levels, and 10 more in the next issue. Smile

Robin Hood and Desperados are my two favorite games in the genre...a genre that is sadly probably dead forever now that Spellbound is out of business and Pyro switched to mobile games.

I'm going to post this here, since I'm not sure it's worth making a new thread. I would have liked to post it on a Commandos 2 thread, since it's my favorite, but the game doesn't have one. Sad

https://www.pcgamesn.com/new-commandos-game?tw=PCGN1

I guess is good news that we get a remaster for these classic games. Hopefully they won't temper with the formula and only fix the problems/exploits.
The possibility of a new game would have been intriguing if I didn't know the current state of the industry. I'm afraid we'll get something streamlined or another shooter. Laughing

Eh, I think they don't really need remasters. The original's graphics are still very crisp and attractive. The UI isn't perfect and the main area of improvement but since this game REQUIRED key presses because clicking on the HUD was too slow, who cares about the UI?

The original game was hard to play on modern machines until GOG re-released it and somehow managed to slow it down to a playable state. The Steam version has always been unplayable because of the ridiculous speed.

Oddly enough, Commandos 3 had a lower resolution than Commandos 1. I think it's because they went full 3D but it makes the third game look shittier than the first. The second is a good mix of 3D and 2D and works quite well.
