Seeing as a good friend of mine has some vacation time we wanted to do some gaming.
we have been looking for ages for an rts like age of empires 1 and 2( we both thought aoe 3 sucked)

One of those RTS"s where citybuilding plays a big role, but doesnt have uber crappy combat(ala the anno series).

We both use x64 win 7 and have to resort to using hamachi, so the olden goldies are too much of a hassle to get to run(9 out of 10 times they dont work to begin with)

Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a game that will play like the old citybuilder rts's and will work without too much of a hassle on current hardware.

Thanks in advance Smile

Why the trolling face? It's a city building game, it has resource management, etc.

Yep. I recall having been quite impressed by Rise of Legends, especially as far as playable factions were concerned.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, we have tried most of these however=(

0 ad was too incomplete to be fully enjoyed
Rise of nations for some reason i just hate, the way the combat mechanics work combined with things like attrition and the tech system, Doesnt float our boat sadly.
Strongold 3 is something ive been thinking of but pretty much everyone is telling me not even to bother with it.

Cossaks is a pretty good idea, Do any of those games work properly in 1920x1080?

Empire earth, age of mythology etc are old ass games that are a bitch to get running on widescreen x64, let alone networked. we tried=(

How about some Crusader Kings 2 (or other Paradox games)? If it's just the two of you playing, it doesn't become too awkward. I know it's not precisely what you're looking for, but if you both have the time to invest in a longer campaign, you can get a lot out of it.

Yeah this is one we regularly play, but were getting somewhat tired of the imbalance it has with our turtle playstyle.

Iirc crusader kings is a turn based game, does it involve any basebuilding or is it like the total war campaign map?

Cossacks 2 Battle for europe seems to have native widescreen support and will hopefully work with win 7, think that game is exactly what we're looking for. played the first ones but for some reason couldnt remember then anymore. thanks for the suggestions=)

What exactly makes stronghold 3 so bad btw?

I don't understand how you can like AoE 1 and 2 but not 3. They are the same.

Are You Serious

Have you played them? AoE III is not a bad game, but it pales in comparison with the second. Just saying.

Earth 2150?

Also, Empire Earth( the second at least) works nicely on Win7 here, though I haven't tried MP.

Real-time grand strategy wargame (tho the speed can be adjusted and even paused). Like I said it's not precisely what you're after - building is a relative minor aspect of gameplay - but RTS games these days seem to skip the AoE style and focus only on the action. Which is a pity, since base building is my favorite part. Razz

They are nothing alike imo. a huge aoe 2 map is nothing compared to the biggest aoe 3 map just to name a thing. the whole step to 3d just didnt work for this series.[/quote]
