Not looking for WOW style games, but don't mind Diablo-esque games though. Would love to see a GTA or Mass Effect style MMO in the future as most of the stuff I know about all seems very similar.

GTA - APB (All Points Bulletin) is a cops and robbers style MMO. Third person shooting with cars and missions. I *think* its gone F2P but I may be wrong, worth checking though. I played the beta before its initial release (it came out, flopped then got re-released as F2P by another publisher) and it was decent enough, but a bit to buggy for my tastes at the time.
Mass Effect - I'm not aware of anything but Planetside 2 is coming out this year (beta should be a short while away) which is a futuristic FPS with massive battles and a skills system. Looks wise it reminds me of ME.. but that's about it. Still, worth keeping an eye on.

My brother played APB and it looked ok but didn't really seem like there was much to it, I'm pretty sure it is F2P. Planetside looks good and seems like it has a cult following due to an old predecessor, I'll defo check that out when its released.
I think the tale end of this year and in 2013 the whole MMO sphere will move up a notch when games like Hawken and Elder Scrolls online come out. The game changers will games like GTA/Mass Effect Online type games with proper economies and full fleshed out career paths and stuff like that. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

You should grab a buddy and play APB. I had a blast playing with my brother.
Sure, it won't last long, but you won't forget it.
World of tanks is great supposedly, didn't play it.

Aion is def the best f2p MMO atm the NA version has no restrictions like other MMOs for free players, dont know if its wow like i didnt play wow.

Fallen Earth is worth checking out. Quite different setting, quite different combat. It's very unique and fun if you can get past the buggy and unpolished nature of the game.

Dota 2 should be out in a few months. You get all the heroes for free so no grinding or anything.

The only diablo-esque f2p I know of atm is Path of Exile. Still in closed beta though, but you might get lucky and get a key.
I think they pushed back the open beta but it shouldnt be TOO far off.
The devs stress quite clearly that it is definitely NOT going to be a pay2win f2p. cash shop will be for vanity items and extra inventory slots, etc.
You can get a beta key if you buy $10 worth of micro trans money or sign up and wait for the random key giveaways or find someone with a giftable beta key.
I got in back in feb, its a good game, very much like diablo 2.
