My sister has an old Dell XPS M1530 with a GTS 250M GPU in it. It experienced artifacting yesterday, and today would refuse to boot up (black screen).

I Googled around a bit, and found this vid -


Honestly thought this was some sick joke, as it goes against any and all logic I could muster. Having nothing to lose however (she wanted a new laptop anyway), I gave it a go (with a much larger blowtorch I might add!).

I was totally fucking dumbfounded when I reassembled it and the damned thing worked perfectly. I was almost certain that such intense heat would destroy the chip/board around it.

So, my question is - HOW/WHY does this work? Question Question

Something to do with the solder melting under regular use and not making proper connections?

I baked a graphics card in my oven once, in the hope that it would fix the artifacting issues, but it just burnt the card.

Yeah it's shit solder. Google for "8800 <underfill or oven, pick one>", "360 reflow" or "PS3 reflow". All similar (although not entirely identical). A torch like that is a bit over the top though Wink

yeah this has worked for ages fixing broken 360s, but wouldn't one use a heatgun and some sort of thermal shielding for the rest of the components? one wrong move with a blowtorch and you've got a bigger problem than bad soldering Laughing
