I have a Laptop HD 500gigs I rescued from a broken laptop. I am using it in my desktop as a backup...It has shown up in "My Computer" with 4 icons one is the main 450gigs and there are 3 other icons each labelled as different parts of the main HD. One has 13.9 gigs, one has 98mbs and the other is 198 mbs. How do I get rid of these others that I can't really use?

They're partitions, extra partitions on the drive and since it's from a laptop I'd wager they're restore/backup partitions that usually contain the replacement OS and data files needed for reinstalling. Best way? Open up disk management and delete the volumes, then extend the 450GB partition to absorb the remaining 14.2GB space =)

There are a million and one tools to do this, but fuck that.. do it the standard way Very Happy

1. Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc
2. Right click the section that has the 13.9GB partition and select "Delete volume"
3. Repeat process for the 100MB and 200MB partitions.
4. Once that's done, right click the 450GB one and choose EXTEND.
5. The drive dialogue should already show the maximum you can extend, you shouldn't need to fill anything in. Just hit accept and go through the steps.

You're welcome! It's not difficult to do and there are plenty of guides online for deleting partitions and extending others to fill the space, if you need more comprehensive help =)
