No,
You need to create flash image and flash the image then run official update do not update first it will block the console.
Use multibuilder to create image hoping you have your console hand image which the modder would have given to you

As far as I know it's safe to run an update matching your current dash version.
Had to do that in order to fix missing avatars, though I'm not sure if it's the same with Kinect.

The avatar, kinect and optional media update do not get applied to your freeboot image for RGH or JTAG. You need to run the official update (Exact to the dashboard you are on) and the xbox will only update the needed files, and leave your freeboot intact.
Its scary to update with official, but it works.

Thanks guys, I updated with the offical update with $$ystemupdate folder. It was a bit scary but it seems all has gone well!
One question. I had block update on in a my launch.ini but it still updated. Does that feature only disable updates that are named the offical way ie. "$SystemUpdate". Thanks for the help.
