how do you determine the ip for your connection, is it dynamic/static, are you behind a router, are you using router(NAT, DMZ, etc.)/switch/hard-/software firewall?

if i remember well (i used it on my lan a while too), you have to set it "run on local ip" or "run on internet ip" or something like that.

and when it runs on 192.168.... or dunno what you got, and then you cant enter it from outside.

Hi all,

thanks for the replies. I think it is running on a local IP as the IP begins with 192.168. So to follow up does anyone know how to set it to run externally ie through the internet IP. I dont think it is the port forwarding as I have opened up the port is running on.

Thanks again

Port forwarding doesn't mean that the ports are open. It means that your router redirects icoming connections to these ports to one specific internal address. So you have to setup your router to forward the ports to the internal ip the serv-u is running on.
Maybe it's possible to enter a dns instead of the ip (in serv-u). You can get one at dyndns and enter that dns into your router (if your router supports that) and the server. I use this for my servers at home and it works, although i am not using serv-u.
And i think you have to set your server to passive mode and forward the port range to the server as well.
