One of the things that appeal to me in MMOs is PvP, and for PvP to appeal to me at all it has to be about killing the other dude and taking all his stuff. For me to make PvP have any appeal there needs to be a severe consequence for losing. This is hardcore pvp to me, and without it any MMO feels like a kids' game.

So, I've been playing EVE-Online for over six years now, and it's been quite good, but I'm actually starting to look for something else and whatever it is it has to be an MMO and it needs to have hardcore PVP. Sci-Fi, Fantasy, etc. matters little - as long as the game mechanics are solid and there aren't a bunch of safety mechanics made to protect stupid people set in place, I want some of that.

So, any recommendations?

http://www.mortalonline.com/ http://www.darkfallonline.com/ I dont think there is mutch else with meaningful PVP except this 2 and EVE. I never tried them myself since im more of a carebear PVE player but i heard good things about them, you could also look into Archeage its an upcoming Sandbox MMO.

as a big ultima player back in the day I know what you mean.

I don't currently have enough time for MMOs so I haven't tried this yet and don't really know much about it, but check out Mortal Online

from what I heard it has the full hardcore pvp stuff you're looking for, as well as an ultima online style skill system where you have no specified classes and just increase a skill by using it.

it's also first person only it seems.

basically it's the MMO I found a while back when I was looking for whatever was closest to ultima online and it looked promising.

-edit-

unfortunately all the mmos that use such awesome pvp that matters are niche games. no mainstream mmo would dare piss off all the casuals and noobs by having other people kill them and loot their stuff.
ah the good old days... I feel kinda old. Sad

World of Darkness might be just up your alley, it's developed by a CCP team too. I've heard there's perma-death in that game. Laughing

Not an mmo but the PvP in DayZ is pretty hardcore. You die, you lose everything.

Oh and I am also very excited about World of Darkness Smile

haha yeah, I was gonna mention dayz, but then I remembered he said he wants an MMO and dayz can't really be called an mmo.. and then I remembered combat loggers and how he wants no protection for stupid people that he's gonna kill.

unfortunately they're just gonna log out so the whole consequence aspect to dayz pvp is a bit shady right now.

A sandbox MMO in development, to be honest I dont know many details but I'm friends with the technical lead. He was the guy who put me onto Mortal Online as a hardcore sandbox PVP game, hated it and decided to make his own.

You should check it out, he seriously knows his stuff when it comes to code and he loves this genre.. It can't go wrong!

Well, hardcore pvp is very niche. Most people want games to treat them like they are stupid and need help all the time. I don't know if it's because people in general have really low self-esteem or whether they really are that stupid, regardless I prefer a game to have severe consequences for messing up and incentivise player skill. This is what drew me to EVE-Online back in 2006 but even EVE has become more and more a "protect the idiots"-type of game, which is why I'm checking around for alternatives.

Nobody here asked any general questions on the status of the game industry..When you are looking for hardcore pvp games you usually have a decent grasp on whats going on with games.

AFAIK they're not even in alpha yet, as soon as it hits I'll hit him up for a bunch of keys. At the moment everyone is working part time on the game so dev isn't as fast as a full time game dev team unfortunately, but they're working on getting as much funding as they can to move more fulltime (25k just gathered from Kickstarter).

Hardcore is a word that often gets MIS-thrown around these days.

Most people label "hardcore" as a PvP game where you can run around and be a dick and murder people all day and laugh about it.

Ultima Online had this for sure, but it wasn't just about running around and murdering people for a laugh (even though it was often funny), it did have a purpose, and when you did murder people, you did choose a separate lifestyle (turning red, can't go in town).

There hasn't been a single other game like UO yet, just dumb games where people want "free" and "hardcore" PvP to run around and murder people 20 levels under you.

The thing that made UO so unique was that people didn't run around to murder just to murder, it had real purpose, and people grew reputations out of it, and it became a community driven feature, rather than the company pushing it in your face because it was part of the story. People would form "blue" groups and hunt reds, and vice versa, it was awesome...

Every single MMO these days pushes PvP in your face because they think you WANT it. UO was just OPEN, instead of forced. PvP wasn't part of the story for UO, it was just an option, and that made all the difference.

/sigh, I miss UO... the REAL UO, before they fucked it all up. Sad

EVE-Online is pretty much like this, when you "murder" people you become red/blinky and can't go into high-sec space. The people you kill venture into low-sec space where you are told "this is dangerous space, don't go in here unless you know wtf you are doing", people do this all the time (still) and get mad and complain about game mechanics.

People who are outlaws also get hunted because you can attack (and kill) them without losing anything. This is part of the appeal of being an outlaw in EVE. The fact that you (as an outlaw) kill dudes indiscriminately is a part of the learning process, it's a part of the adapt or die-mentality. It's great, but it's become more and more sided toward the people who are stupid. They want to take away the dangers and make pvp more voluntary, which I am against. EVE is a PvP game first and foremost.

Check out Xsyon as well, maybe it has become decent by now.

Edit: A list: http://www.mmorpg-center.com/category/sandbox-mmo
Not all of them might have full loot PvP.

The older versions of Lineage 2 can be somehow called hardcore
There is no full loot but you loose a certain amount of xp each death
If you kill someone without them hitting you back you get red and if someone kills you while you are red there is a chance that you can drop your gear.

Good old days still remember how i lost 90% xp on a lvl within one day ;l

Anyways nowadays i wouldnt recommened it though
The official servers are f2p but the game isnt that punishing anymore and it is crowded with cheaters and private servers with older chronicles dont have that much of a population and i guess the learning curve is too high to catch up with experienced players.
