I recently had my 20th birthday (January 21) and got some cash from my parents, so now i need advice on what hardware to buy. I currently have an Asus Geforce FX5950 Ultra Deluxe with 256mb memory, 512MB PC3200 RAM, and an AMD XP processor at 2.2Ghz.

I know that my RAM is currently the biggest bottleneck on my system, but i still need some advice. I found some really cheap RAm at an online store, and i can buy a total of 2GB Corsair PC3200 RAM for a total of about €270 including shipping. However, i don't know wether i really need that much. Should i get the full 2 GB of RAM, so i have plenty of extra RAM for the future, or should i only get 1GB, and save some of my money for future upgrades? Will my CPU and GFX card cut it for some time to come, or do i need to upgrade those too? If they'll last for a pretty long time to come, i mioght as well get the 2GB of RAM, but if i'll need to upgrade them in the near future, i better save some money for those upgrades and only get the 1GB of RAM. What do you guys think?

Well, you don´t need more than 1,5 gb of RAM...so i suggest but one 1 GB of RAM, keep the rest of the money.

Get the RAM, and upgrade your CPU if possible.

With computer tech and PC gaming, it's best to wait until you need the hardware upgrade before you buy it. Need may be the wrong word, but seeing people upgrade their video cards 6 months in advance anticipating Doom 3 was ridiculous. By that time the card will be significantly cheaper and a better card available.

Don't get too much ram, ddr ram will be obsolete in the near future. AMD or better their chipset makers will be adopting ddr2 ram for sure, because that's the only way to get higher frequencies. So if you buy too much ram today you probably can't use it on your next board, assuming you will buy one in a year or so.

Ok, i just noticed something. The RAM i intend to buy is called the following: "Corsair VS512MB400 Value Select 2x512Mb (tot. 1024Mb/1Gb) Dual DDR PC3200 400MHz 184pin Unbuffered CL2.5"

Notice where it says "2x512Mb (tot. 1024Mb/1Gb)". Does that mean that i get two individual sticks of 512 MB RAM, or just one stick with 1 gig on it? Because i only have 3 RAM slots on my mainboard, so if i wanted to buy 2 of these, i'd get a total of 4 RAM sticks, and i only have 3 slots.

Thanks.

Thanks, whoknows! Boy would my face have been red had i bought 2 of those, with only 3 RAM slots! Crying or Very sad

But anyway, i have another question. If i were to buy a stick of corsair 1 GB RAM, would it work with my current RAM, or would there be conflicts? My current RAM is some cheap no name crap i bought for like €60 about 2 years ago. But it's still the exact same RAM, which is PC3200 184 pin @ 400mhz. So would it work without any problems with my current RAM?

that's hard to predict. Take a look at the manual of your mobo and see if it supports 1gb sticks in the first place and what the maximum amount of ram is, and if it says somthing about single or double sided sticks.

Best advice i can give you is get rid of the cheap ram, 1gb is more than enough though so dont bother going higher than that unless you plan to do alot of graphic intensive work.

If you want to get other hw upgrades, i would suggest getting a new Monitor or gaming mouse/keyboard.

Spend the rest of the money the way YOU want to, get some poon Wink
