Last summer wasn’t a great one for Ryan Reynolds, who had two films (Green Lantern and The Change-Up) that kinda failed at the box office. Safe House ended up being a somewhat better showing for him, although that was largely due to Denzel Washington’s presence. There is still a lot of doubt surrounding his ability to headline a big studio tentpole, and yet, the offers haven’t stopped coming in. His next major starring role will be in R.I.P.D. with Jeff Bridges, and he is also still attached to star in Fox’s Deadpool movie. Now this month we have word that he is close to signing on for the upcoming Highlander remake as well. If there can only be one, I don’t think this is the one we all had in mind.
According to Variety, Reynolds is the current frontrunner to play Connor MacLeod in the new Highlander film (assuming that the main character’s name is retained from the original), an immortal swordsman who engages in combat to the death with others of his kind. The sole survivor is awarded “The Prize”. Christopher Lambert played the lead role in the 1986 film and three of its sequels, while Clancy Brown played his arch enemy The Kurgan.
Ryan Reynolds is said to be weighing other potential opportunities, and it’s not yet clear if an offer has been made, however, both Lionsgate and director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) want him on board. It sounds like it could be a big opportunity for Reynolds, but considering how poorly he anchored the fantastical elements of Green Lantern, I don’t know that this is a good fit for him. That being said, perhaps Fresnadillo is taking the remake in a very different direction. Can you see Ryan Reynolds as The Highlander? Does it make you more or less interested in a Highlander remake?
this is one franchise that just. doesnt. need. a. reboot.
every movie has been incredibly disconnected. every movie has just made shit up as it went along with little concern for any continuity or canon.
just make a new highlander movie... by all means call it 'highlander' without a subtitle, and just do your own thing like every single one of the previous highlander movies have done... theres no NEED to bring back connor as a new actor. NO. NEED.
Regarding the reboot. I loved the first movie, The rest are... well not "meh" but kind of towards those regions.
So with that in mind i think a reboot could be possible but if they cast Ryan Reynolds as the Highlander i'll be annoyed. He doesn't fit the part at all. I wonder if this Juan Carlos has seen the movies to begin with..

Though to be perfectly honest, you'd be best served if you just watched Highlander. That's it, just Highlander. Not Highlander II: The Quickening, not Highlander The Final Dimension or ANY others, just forget they exist and watch #1. It's a glorious film. The sequels shit all over the accomplishment and memory
Honestly, I'm not making it up - they're terrible, terrible films even when watched standalone, let alone coming from the excellent first entry. Go watch the first one, love it, then watch #2 and see every single thing about #1 completely and utterly pissed all over and destroyed. It goes downhill from there, since #2 is the "best" of the sequels >_>
"Oh wait, we have met before! We were best friends on an alien planet but we were exiled to Earth... not only that, but we were turned into babies, beamed into a woman's womb and then birthed with no memory of who we used to be!"
There are a handful of people in the world that are immortal, they cannot die by conventional means and only decapitation can end their life. They're driven to fight each other, to the death, until there is only one remaining - who then amasses such power that he, or she, could become a God if they so chose.
That's Highlander.
Highlander 2?
Hurr durr herpitty derp, aliens, derp memory wiped, hurr durr durr hurrdehurr 500 years in the future derp hurr derpderp.

I don't doubt for a second that it sucks, but i might watch it anyway. Be assured if i like the first movie i won't let the second affect my opinion on the first
