Man, I love the old Caribbean environment, big pirate ships, and naval warfare stuff. But the re's not been a serious pirate movie made since what? the 70:ies? Why is this? I don't get it, the closest thing yet was Master and Commander which showed how awesome it can be with the calm and wait (almost like a good submarine movie) and then the clash.
Baaahhh... I want to see a really good pirate movie that doesn't have Disney involved in it or "Treasure Island" or any goofy shit.
You made it sound a lot better than 5/10 in this thread.
That movie is easily worth a 8 as it is indeed epic.
5/10 is still better than nearly half the movies ever made. The strengths in the few ocean scenes did not outweigh the longwinded pointlessness to the plot of the movie though, and the characters were a bit shallow. Like a porn movie with one good sex scene in it with some nice looking lasses, and then the weather report and sights of trees for an hour.
As far as I remember, what you're looking for doesn't exist (unless it's some really unknown niche movie); apparently the pirate theme has been targeted to a teenager audience and there's no way back
The lack in recent years before PoTC most be blamed on Cutthroat Island; Crazy bad and only earned 10 million out of its 115 million dollars cost.
The studio behind it, filed for bankrupcy 6 weeks after its release. And Carolco Pictures where behind such movies as: T2, the first 3 Rambo, Angel Heart and Total Recall.
But check out Roman Polanski´s movie Pirates - with a fun Walter Matthau. It helps if one has seen some of the old pirate movies from the 50ties to enjoy this one tho.
And The Pirates! Band of Misfits is just out
There are two kinds of people I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.

I'll check them out to satiate my need, where the comedy and slapstick jokes-pirate movies of the past 20 or so years could not.
Not exactly with pirates, or that much combat, but:
Hornblower

Great film. Overlooked quite a bit. Has a great sense of exploration to it, and the tension in the film is great as well. Also contains one of Vangelis's best soundtracks apart from Blade Runner IMO.

did you actually saw this movie ?! it was WAY ahead of its time .. the thing was they made two expensive movies in one year Cutthroat Island and Showgirls ... the thing was they didn't had any budget left for... ADVERTISING
after the studio bankruptcy MGM took those two films and GUESS FUCKING WHAT they did such a great advertising campaign that ....Showgirls generated more than $100 million from video rentals alone and it became one of MGM's top 20 all-time bestsellers that sold EVEN MORE... you can say MGM was the fault here , they where the main distributors that fucked UP and forced the studio bankruptcy

Why would you question if ive seen it? I question your taste in movies tho - Cuttthroat island stinks on so many levels.
Marty Feldman last film ... heh he died in a kinda black comedy way a cartoonist that wanted a autograph that came from a near by movie set , dressed as a cop scared him giving him a heart attack ... later his experience and guilt he poured into a satiric autobiographic comic about this event named "I Killed Marty Feldman" ... anyways this movie was trash
Why my ass. You say its good and ahead of its time and thats fine. Don´t come and attack me and say I havent seen the movie because I dont like it. The fuck I owe you an explanation of my movie tastes.
