FIFA 13 players 'to look more realistic'
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/346332/fifa-13-players-to-look-more-realistic/
Quote: | While previously it was only possible to offer highly accurate 3D facial likenesses for the most recognisable players, a press release from Glasgow-based Dimensional Imaging claims the firm's new tech will allow EA to give more players than ever the "DI3D star treatment".
Mike Harrison, director of EA Capture at Electronic Arts, said: "We recognised a few years ago that raising the quality of facial appearance was an increasing priority for our game teams. Working closely with Dimensional Imaging has allowed us to develop a highly accurate 3D facial capture pipeline that is now so efficient that we can apply it to more characters than we ever thought possible."
Dimensional Imaging CEO Colin Urquhart added: "The relentless increase in the quality of computer graphics makes it ever more necessary to capture real life human likenesses in order to create believable virtual characters, but this process has traditionally been very time consuming for video game development.
"EA was one of the first developers to recognize the need for improved capture workflows, and working with them since EA Sports FIFA 10 has been instrumental in helping Dimensional Imaging to develop a product suite that is now suitable for even the most demanding development pipelines in the business."

screens
Spoiler: | |
Quote: | At the showcase, the main producer David Rutter, told to his guests that FIFA 13 will have 5 major improvements and we will list them bellow:
First Touch Control
One of the first things to do at FIFA 13 was to implement a more realistic ball control. Now it will be more difficult to control a receiving ball with your player. It all depends on the strength, the speed, the ball height and the technical skills of your player to achieve the control of the ball and run with it.
Player Impact
Another feature that got improved is the player impact engine. There will be no more unrealistic animations in the players challenges! The engine has been optimized and new a set of impact values has been added at the hip and the upper body area.
Complete Dribble
In FIFA 12 you could dribble just by changing direction,in FIFA 13 this won’t be possible anymore!
Tactical Free-Kicks
The free-kicks got a new free kick system.Up to three players can now gather around the ball and make fun of the opponent’s defense and goalie. You can now feint a direct shot and adjust it to a player who comes off the wall. Also the defense set pieces have been improved to go with the new free kick system. For example, you can make a defensive team with more players into the wall and send out a player to block the ball.
Attacking AI
The offensive Artificial Intelligence got a huge improvement. The CPU-controlled players got better running routes and better guessing options of where you pass the ball. Also the strikers are smarter and move with the offside line of your defenders, waiting to receive the ball and run with it towards your goal post.
Beside all of these improvements,David Rutter still wants to make other upgrades to the game such as, new passing types, new shot rotation moves and new goalkeeper animations. Also the cheering animations have been adjusted to the current football atmosphere. One last thing he really wants to improve is the referee! |

Sounds good, I'm looking forward to seeing the AI improvements and the new ball control. Until now it was too easy to dribble with the top players

i never, NEVER EVER, got the concept of releasing screenshots of the upcoming fifa this early
-) the graphics are the same, no new engine, nothing
-) the kits are those of the current / last season, no changes there
what's the point? i might just boot up fifa 12 and see the exact same stuff. they do this every year and i just don't get it.

It's early doors yet but i agree with you.
I remember when they released 11, it was virtually the sa,e as 10 and a big disapointment.
If 13 isn't much improved options wise they will not be in for the big bucks which 12 brought imo.

@OPM:
I think they did it to show the enhanced 3D likeness/improved models that was posted above by Ivan (though the players look the same as before to me )

Good interview but:
"we brought the Fifa Street dribbling concept into Fifa 13"
Not sure if want..
Though I really hope the AI improvements will be implemented for real this time, FIFA 12 was very repetitive if played only in single player, since the AI always followed the same patterns over and over and defenses were often bad positioned

I was reading Fever's post and:
Quote: | Contextual First Touch
- In FIFA 13 the quality of a players first touch is now determined by a new context based system which factors in pass speed, pass type, ball height, player pressure, body position, motion, player attributes and also weather.
-There is now genuine separation between control touches and the ball itself, the ball is no longer “glued” to the players feet.
- First Touch Control is designed to create more “battle for possession” opportunities, allowing defenders to step in when an opposition player takes a heavy touch.
- Not every poor touch will result in you losing the ball. First Touch Control also works visually so whilst you might maintain possession the ball may “pop-up” or bobble making your next pass more difficult.
- First Touch Control creates genuine risk when taking a touch in a difficult situation. As a defender especially you’ll need to decide when to clear and when to take a touch. EA want the system to make you think more like a real footballer.
- Heavy control touches can be calmed by slowing from a full sprint to receive passes.
In some instances having a slightly heavy first touch can work to your advantage because the ball will move out of your feet and in to space.
- First Touch Control aims to provide variation in first touch all over the pitch, rather than the uniformed perfect touch seen in FIFA 12.
Passing Changes
- New contextual pass types have been added to FIFA 13 resulting in players automatically elevating passes if a defender is in their way.
- Passes in FIFA 13 can now be over-hit which introduces a risk/reward element between pass speed and First Touch Control.
- The First Touch Control system has allowed EA to open up the pass speed range as players no longer take the perfect touch every time.
- A new suite of animations for clearances have been added to FIFA 13. |
This sounds quite amazing on paper, with much more randomness and realism, let's hope it's not just marketing made in ea
Also it has been confirmed that for the 2nd consecutive year PC the version will be the same as the console one, incredible!1

I call total bullshit on more or less all the "improvements". As mentioned above it's TOTALLY just marketing. The last 2-3 FIFAs have been HUGELY disappointing with the features mentioned before release often being relatively hard to actually see in the final game.
I must say I don't know what EA are doing - they had a GREAT game on their hands with FIFA 09. How, in 3 years, they have not managed to make that game COMPLETELY AMAZING is beyong me. They just keep adding more and more unbalanced and buggy stuff or ridiculous modes instead of fixing the core problems such as lack of player personallity, the feel of unbeatable momentum, rugby-like tackles, attributes that don't matter and completely brain-dead AI.
I almost have more hope in Pro Evo this year. It's much more of a REAL football game, but unfortunately quite lacking in "finish".
