Right,
anyone out there able to help me find a good solution to how to connect my old amigas (or c64's) to a modern monitor?
I thinking in the terms of perhaps suggesting cables etc.
Thanks!

To a modern monitor will require an active converter. Don't think any model outputs a signal that can easily be converted to VGA; forget about DVI and HDMI

Well your best bet is probably still to use one of the video-out solutions that go to composite or s-video and then using an active converter to turn that into a VGA signal.

You'd need a monitor that can handle 15khz signal, and that's basically impossible to get today. There are scandoublers (with Flickerfixers) you can buy @ Amigaki (they're rather expensive and you must mount them on the motherboard chips). I'd suggest you simply tried finding an old multiscan monitor that support the video frequencies of your Amiga and/or C64, preferably one with composite input.
Using a tv-card is crap, picture will be blurry and dirty as hell.

I've got one of those old tv cards laying about for my pc. I suppose I could slamdunk it into my pc and connect the old computers through it.. no?

Yes, but the quality will be severely limited. I've tried the same myself with my Amiga 1200 and ZX Spectrum 48k+ and the quality was.. less than satisfactory.
There are plenty of solutions to get SCART, component, S-Video etc. but it's still difficult to get good results unless you have a monitor that supports 50Hz and/or 15KHz.
This is where I order stuff for my Amiga 1200 (recently ordered a CF-PCMCIA kit with a CF-card).

For Amiga 500 (OCS/ECS): http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=918
Indivision ECS is a new scandoubler / flicker fixer for OCS and ECS Amiga computers such as: A500, A500+, A1500, A2000*, A3000* (T) and CDTV. It will also install on the Amiga 600 if you also have the new A604 memory expansion or older A603 with internal floppy removed. For installation in the A1000 only, an Amiga 1000 Socket Adapter is also required.
It is the most advanced flicker fixer ever produced for OCS/ECS Amiga computers - allowing VGA monitors (flat screens and CRTs) to correctly display games and applications.
€99.42 Price includes VAT
or A1200: http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1085
Indivision AGA 1200 MK2 is a new internal scandoubler/flicker fixer for the Amiga 1200 computer and Amiga 4000T only.
Features
First flicker fixer with DVI-I output for the A1200
A1200 internal, plugs over Lisa, no other chip-connections (other internal flickerfixers used an additional Alice-adapter)
Full 24 bit colour depth for all screenmodes and output frequencies
All OCS/ECS/AGA screenmodes displayed and scan-converted, output is always over 60Hz and flicker-free
The DVI-I connector can be connected to a standard VGA monitor through use of an optional adapter.
As additional screenmodes become available in future, the firmware can be updated by the user using the forthcoming software tools.
€149.88 Price includes VAT
I actually want the 1200 one, but @ €149... no way. Still looking for different solutions.
But I suggest you try the TV-card solution and see how good you can get it. Perhaps you're lucky and get an okay image.

Ankh, since you're a fellow Swede, check out Safir (Swedish Amiga Forum), they've got some real knowledgeable people there that build and mod their Amigas as well as help out others who are trying to do stuff like you.

I would just find an old terminal CRT and use that. They are laying around everywhere unused these days.
