Well, if you think about it, it has a lot of knock-on effects - BioWare may live or die based on this and DA3. EA's bottom-line is directly affected by number of subscribers, which affects how much money they have for other projects. It may also affect what other Star Wars projects we see in the future.

I think they'll prolong the switch to f2p just to cover up their failure and "make" it look like it was/is a commercial success. So 1-2 years is my guess.

It will go free to play because EA are greedy bastards.
When EA starts making very little money with current financial model.
But as we know EA are greedy bastards... And free to play model will be abusive and bad or like Free Trail.

If it goes F2P like Star Trek Online it could be a good thing. I've been playing that for a few months and I've found their F2P to be pretty good. I haven't remotely felt like I needed to buy points to do anything in it, which is what caused me to buy some for some extra things (gamma quadrant duty officer packs and some bank/inventory slots)
I was playing just fine without those and could have continued without them all the way through the game, but I didn't feel pressured to get them.
However, EA isn't known for being that smart. Which is funny because EA is the one company who has been heavily involved with a Korea game company for years who basically wrote the book on F2P. They've got no problem sharing games and technology with them, but when they bring F2P over to the NA side of things they just lose their minds and seem to completely miss the point.
