Quote: | Realm Explorer will be a computer game about creation in the fantasy universe of Gnostaria; your creations. In perhaps the most dynamic sandbox world yet to be conceived you will be able to dig the soil and mine ore, precious metals and gems all in a beautiful and dynamic 3D world. The terrain will shape and form to your actions. Drive a shovel into the ground and watch the earth give way. Heave your pickaxe into a cave wall and see the stone disintegrate before you; revealing the treasure beneath. Go on adventures alone or with friends via internet multiplayer and craft weapons, armor, tools and other items. How you play is up to you. The possibilities are limitless. |
It looks like some 3D Terraria with even more stuff in it. For now, I'm just curious about where this is going.

I haven't read much of these kickstarter project abstracts. Are they all like this? "We're gonna make a game that will blow out your mind!!!" style?

Some do look pretty decent, they need to create a quick "hype" either way though considering they only have x weeks/days to get their funding done, some do it this way, others (most) tend to use a different approach by trying to persuade people to join the upper tiers. (and get more stuff)

IMHO most of this projects will fail... hard. I would trust a group with some actual experience like Inxile or Double Fine or people with some shit already done like Grim Dawn or FTL. The rest for me are guys with great ideas but zero xp in working as a development group and managing budget or scammers who want easy money (there is atleast one example for each of these groups).
Well how hard is to put a fake or impossible project on kickstarter get the money and never be heard again. People from kickstarter won't take the responsibility on themselves nor paypal or amazon.

I agree with VonMisk. Projects like this will most likely fail because people with very little experience get involved, get a good idea, start making a small demo and see it's going somewhere, but don't actually realize that the effort needed to make an actual game goes up exponentially real fast.
I know because I used to be one of them, and worked on a similar "great idea". We didn't have any funding but most of us did work 10+ hours a day for a year and a half after we which we just had to give up. It's not that the project wasn't going anywhere, we actually got most of the important stuff off the ground and working. However as the project grew the older stuff we implemented started to fail and had to be re-done. Eventually we gave up and decided to go with a simpler project.
You just need to have enough experience and plan every single detail out before starting with the project, and newcomers just don't have that much experience. Even a small list of gameplay mechanics will involve more work than you may imagine as things start popping up left and right.
And these guys seem to be very newbish. They're using Unity and most of the things they've shown are built-in the engine and very easy to implement. I'd actually be willing to bet that I could re-create the video shown within a week provided I have the art assets. If you didn't want terrain sculpting feature I could do it within a day.
Unity is also a very limited engine as far as medium/large size projects go and they will start running into walls soon.
