I'm looking for a multiplayer game to keep myself busy in the evenings, ideally something that has some kind of progress as I like to see myself moving towards a goal (the main reason why I want something multiplayer). I'm not really that bothered what the game is so long as I dont utterly suck at it. Here is a list of multiplayer games I've played recently..

  • World Of Warcraft - Love this game, dont care if other people hate it, I think its awesome. The only issue is I'm totally bored of it. The PVE is utterly stale these days and the PVP is pointless (but enjoyable on some level). The main reason I've stepped away is the lack of new content and the fact that there is no meaningful PVP progression (I dont care about achievements or rank, I want things to move forward and change when I PVP).
  • Starcraft 2 - I've spent the past few days giving this a try.. Man.. I fucking suck at Starcraft 2. I managed to place in Silver league (I'm assuming this is still full of people who are shit but immensely better than me as they all destroy me in the first rush..). The worst thing is, I know all the bloody tactics, I follow SC2 tornys.. I just can't play myself Razz!
  • BF3 - I do still love this game, but it I'd rather have more tactics involved in the game. I like to play more of a support roll in online FPS and BF doesn't really provide a huge amount..

I can't wait for Planetside 2 to come out, thats pretty much my perfect game.. Shame its about a year away if not more. Anyone have any ideas?

Did you try America's Army 3 ? really nice FPS shooter created by the US Army.

I would not recommend any CoD games or SWTOR.

I've played a bit of ARMA 3 and to be honest, I'm not exactly a great FPS player, which is exactly why I love sitting behind the awesome shots keeping them alive Razz or sneaking into the enemy base stealthed and stealing the capture point (can you tell what I'll be playing as in PS2? Razz)..

COD can do rot in hell Very Happy. I did try SWTOR, I grabbed a trial from someone here and to be honest, it bored the pants off me, the classes where so generic and I just couldn't imagine having any interesting PVP battles with what they brought to the table.

As above I guess, do I have to be decent at FPS games to actually be useful?

I may give Natural Selection 2 a try.. Its irritating that games like this don't seem to do as well as classic FPS games. Does anyone remember the Savage series? Now those games kicked ass! Yet they died a pretty quick death because so few people played them, even after they went F2P Sad..

I'd look into games like Tribes Ascend, Team Fortress 2, Dota 2 or Quake Live. Those are games I currently play when I need that MP fix.

Savage was cool. I like to blame S2 for them doing so poorly.

NS1 was awesome, one of my favorite FPS games of all time. NS2 is just kinda lol, the engine they made is so poorly optimized and the server code is still largely in shambles, they haven't really got to actually making the gameplay anything beyond semi-playable. It's a shame really.

I recommend LoL/HoN/Dota 2. Especially dota 2 since I think it's the best of the bunch. Big learning curve but something about the genre just makes me want to play hours on end

lol Tribes.. Quake.. effectively the two worst games for me Razz! I got destroyed so badly in Tribes I decided to never embarrass myself that poorly ever again Razz TF2 is a good call, I'd enjoy it far more if it had some persistent, mmo like functionality. If only Global Agenda didnt suck so bad.. Did they improve it at all since release?

I dunno about NS2, they've made some massive improvements recently so if its been a while since you checked it out go check out the NS2HD channel on youtube. Still, I havent actually played it, so that might just be some good PR polish Razz..

I enjoy HON/LOL but the communities are so fucking horrid I get irritated and stop playing. You make one wrong move and its "HEY FAG, FUCK YOU".. I've played HON since beta and its *always* been that way, LOL felt even worse!

Thing is, the best multiplayer games don't have the kind of progression, that say an MMO has. Especially PvP games, where equal footing at the start of a match is a priority. For PvP, I think MMOs are too item focused, thus the outcome is not all about skill, but about time and dedication to grinding as well. I don't like those to be factors.

Also, yeah, MOBA games have the worst communities, I think it has to do with the game design itself. Nothing beats having to wait 40 seconds for your respawn, time enough to vent your frustration. That's one of the reasons I prefer strategies, you might lose your whole damned army, and still win eventually, if you make good decisions. MOBAs are about that one single character, when that gets fucked with, you get fucked with. Not only do you stay inactive, when you lose to an enemy once, the more times he beats you, the less chance you have of catching up.

I find the SC2 community so much more mature to be honest.

Thats not really the kind of progression I mean, although I do enjoy gaining something, I'm talking about persistence within the world itself not the character. I don't think there is anything out there at the moment that actually does this, although Firefall and PS2 seem to be going that way.. Guild Wars 2 also has a persistent world PVP mode which looks interesting but a tad zergy right now (from the videos I've seen).

I don't mind characters gaining things as they progress so long as those things only effect the way in which you play the game (having unlockable guns which function differently but are no better or worse balance wise for example). I really enjoyed the unlock system in BRINK, in fact, that game was amazing. Its just a shame the devs fucked it up so badly in the worst week, it could have been amazing had they just spent a bit more time on the release Sad!

God I wish that game had of done well Sad!

if you love wow, you should give Rift a go, at least first 20 lvls trial ( even tho thats probably weakest part of the game, and strongest would be when you hit lvl 50, i used to say game starts at max lvl in wow, but you cant even compare that to rift.. its 5 times that )

sc2 custom maps you should give them a go, wc3 custom maps still alive and kicking, tho some older superb maps are barely hosted, but nothing stops you doing that

NWLL (crysis mechwarrior mod )

Ahh Rift.. See, I enjoyed Rift, I really did, but leveling felt like a grind, I got to about level 20, the zones where empty, no dungeons or online community, the PVP was meh at that level.. Another MMO I wished was better..

WAR, now that was a good PVP game in the beginning.. then they killed it.. Although I did hear they'd brought back some of the good stuff?

You should try World of Tanks if you want a nice balance between skills and strategy/teamwork.

F2P, very active development, huge community.

Some skills obviously help but a good positioning/being in the right place at the right time is much more important, imo. And patience, a lot of patience Very Happy

Lineage 2 on some priv server (not low rate like x1 x2 or x10, i prefer Hellbound chronicle or earlier ones - imo after HB there's too much unbalance) - i love the game cuz of fun pvp, flames on trade chats and ofc PKs Very Happy.

Tried the Project Reality mod for Battlefield 2? Great squad teamwork, great tactics, slower gameplay. Rewards tactics over reflexes. But, there's no leveling up (sense of progression?). It's not an MMO.

How is the GCI community? Going strong? I hadnt bought it yet purely because I got the impression if wasn't doing very well.. plus it is a twitch shooter to some extent, which I'm not great at!

I'll take a peek at European Escalation too Smile
