Two weeks ago my system started acting very weird. Crashes, freezes, downloading to a HD stalled the system forcing a reboot etc. etc. etc.. Red light @ RAM slots lit up. Removed one stick, tried both separately in all slots, red light lit up no matter what. Came to the conclusion that my cheap board was dying on me (currently running with one stick stable, if I put the other stick in corruption would ensue no matter what slots were used, meaning RAM-sticks are OK.

It COULD be the memory controller in the CPU, but I doubt it. Anyway, decided to get some "new" stuff and ordered an ASUS Sabretooth P67.B3 board and a 2500K.

Good stuff. Smile I have to say that fitting the sabretooth onto the chassis is a bit of a pain in the arse though, due to the thickness of the "thermal shield".

Picked up the box earlier and I have to say that the skin-pink slots look funny on a military-grey industrial-style board... Otherwise looking very sweet and different.

do they make an LGA1366 socket of that one?

been wanting to replace this POS gigabyte one i've had for a while now and may be able to afford it soon.

kind of a bit pissed off at my current one since it'll only recognize 2 memory modules at a time so i can't really easily narrow down which is causing the stuttering, gigabyte in general though has been nothing but problems for me.

Sorry to ask a silly question but... what's the point of that thermal armor?

was wondering that too, tempted to call shenanigans on it being a gimmick but i have to assume the sales pitch wants you to believe it functions as a heatsink for the entire board at once.

There's a slot for a 50mm fan, and if you have a CPU fan that is directing air downwards the air will stream under the thermal armor and cool the stuff under it.

I don't know if it makes much of a difference but it doesn't hurt. And it looks really cool.

I LOVE this CPU.

I've just been doing some basic testing and O/C'ing and this is what I've reached so far:

 Spoiler:

I let Prime95 run for 30 minutes. Will continue tweaking, finding good voltages, see how far I can take it.

Absolutely fantastic, esp. compared to my i5 750 that caused sudden powerloss after ~30 seconds running at 4.0GHz, only 3.8GHz was stable no matter what I did.

I have a feeling that 4.7-4.9 won't be too difficult to reach. Perhaps a better cooler (H80 for instance).

Great stuff. Very Happy

sounds like you got a keeper then, still haven't found the LGA1366 equivalent sadly.

does it make jumpers and other stuff as much of a pain in the ass as it looks like?

i mean, i may be wrong and it's a very low quality image to be sure but i can't even see one visible fan controller, kinda makes me worry that that thing goes right over top of stuff like that, it's already a pain in the ass not disconnecting the fan controller for the side door when i put it back on with the case i've got and that's without obstructions to the actual pins for them.

Nah, the fan headers are clear. It's actually a very clever design. The only thing I had a tiny issue with was the screws to secure the board on the risers, but with a little fiddling that was easily fixed.

I figured I'd take it another step, and this is the current result. Very Happy

 Spoiler:

4700MHz, temps as shown are rock stable, they stay where they are (Prime-test finished 24 tests and then started another test, this time 8k FFT's).

System:

Fractal Design R3 case with plenty of fans.
Corsair TX 650 PSU
ASUS Sabretooth P67 Rev.B3, BIOS 1904
Intel Core i5 2500K
8GB Corsair XMS3 1600MHz RAM (two 4GB modules)
OCZ Vertex 2E 90GB

Noctua DH-12 v2 Heatsink (two 120mm fans)

The cooler is the next thing I'll replace, I don't like temps at 70 or above. Corsair H80 is on my wishlist.

I LOVE this setup. Very Happy

Overclocking doesn't increase max FPS, it does its magic for your minimum FPS - especially in heavy games like BF3, or in console ports (Cool Face). Less stuttering basically; average may not even go up that much, but it'll be much more stable.

yeah overlocking is more for higher average fps, more stable fps.

if you want more max fps, get a better GPU ^^

5GHz @ 1.4v validated through CPU-Z. Doesn't mean it's stable or anything but that it's possible. With better cooling it may actually be stable at that (or get even higher).

I LOVE this chip and board... Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Still running Prime95 here. So far perfectly stable @ 1.4v, temps are stable (and at the limit of what I feel comfy with).

4.8GHz... Schweeeeeet. I wanna hump my chip + board.

So this is my Profile page in UEFI:

All speeds stable, but 4900MHz is a still hot. I need better cooling before I'll run 4900 or above (5.0-5.1).

ps. I LOVE how you can take screenshots in BIOS straight to a USB stick.

About to drop some cash on a new cpu and motherboard and 16 gb ram.

Was thinking about the Sabertooth x79

The Sabertooth X79 should be the overclockers dream. My P67 sure is.

Just found this nifty tool as well. Apparently my board have 12 (!!) different thermal sensors spread out on the board:

I hope so, it's not the cheapest board out there.
Not going too OTT though will be throwing a i7 3820 quad in it.

Doesn't work out that much more than if i went with a 2700K and a good board.
