I've read that Facebook Timeline will be mandatory after March 30th, I really hate the new format, I will probably leave Facebook altogether if this becomes mandatory!

Don't use that either. Or any other social network.
Besides, didn't google did something like selecting only a few users to be able to register when google plus started? That's always a popular choice...

You can do that manually by browsing the webpages you're interested in. Or is that too hardcore?

Nothing to do with that, I refrain myself from joining facebook for a long time, and I'm not a fan of much of what it represents, but I won't hide the fact that I enjoy some aspects of it, I don't use facebook as a substitute to the internet, which is what most people do, I see it as yet another site for keeping myself updated.
Why does everything have to be so black and white? Why does it Facebook can only be either 100% useful or 100% useless, why not something somewhere in between?

This Facebook is internet cancer. I will not go further into this, this is my opinion and I don't want to explain it. And I do respect your opinion and I don't want to change it, but that's my reaction over it.

Facebook is cancer because most people are ignorant and want everything simplified, the problem isn't the tool, but rather the way in which the masses use it.
I for one, fully understand where your opinion of Facebook comes from, because I held a similar view for a long time, but then I realized something, we cannot demonize something, which sometimes might end up being useful, because most people use it in an obsessive, exclusive manner.

I hate timeline too.
I don't care what people think of facebook or me on it.
It came in handy last night. my friend lost her phone, thought she left it at starbucks and it was closed. Anyway when I got home I found it in my purse?!? So I put out a status update asking anyone who saw her to let her know that I had her phone. And it took about an hr to get back to her. Saved her a 2 hr bus to grab a nonexistent phone the next day.
