Psychonauts 2 required $18m to happen, Notch backs away from funding

“I somewhat naively thought ‘a couple of million’ was two million. I had no doubt in my mind that a Psychonauts 2 would earn that money back easily. Turns out they wanted 18 million dollars, haha. I don’t have the time at the moment to even try to get educated enough to make an 18 million dollar deal. Perhaps in some distant future when I’m no longer trying to make games, I could get into angel investing. I’ve made one private investment into a game so far, at $100K, and it’s frankly a lot more work than I thought.”

$18M? Laughing Is this a joke? Laughing

There are AAA games with development costs of less than that, or around that.

Psychonauts 1 had a budget of around $13 million, according to Tim Schafer.
So this doesnt sound that far off.

Not likely unless it's some indie game that became a mega hit. Big publisher/studio AAA titles cost a lot more to develop.

Are there more expensive games? Sure, but we are talking about the Assassin's Creeds and the GTAs (and game's that stay 10 years under development, *cough* DNF *cough*), etc.. Psychonauts 2 cannot compare to those (not that it can compare to eg Uncharted 2 anyway Laughing )

If a game like Psychonauts 2 requires close to $20M then they are either doing it wrong, orrrrr they are making it into the wrong type of game. Psychonauts 2 is unlikely to be as big of a hit as Halo or Uncharted if you ask me so why the hell spend so much money on it as these games do.

Does this game need Holywood tallent, extensive mocap, 5 animators for each character and so on? I think not.

I'd be tempted to say that $18m was all-in. That is, it included promotional material as well. It's all well and good saying GoW cost $10m, but factor in marketing and it probably went to $20m.

As an example

http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2011/10/sony_uk_stumps_up_5_million_marketing_budget_for_uncharted_3_drakes_deception

Obviously, Psychonauts 2 would have less of a marketing spend than that, but it's still something that has to be factored in.

The $2M he mentions is obviously with no marketing costs, so if the ~$18M includes marketing he should have said so.

$18 million vs $30 million, $28 million etc... In other words, Psychonauts 2 is at the bottom of the average cost for a multiplatform game. Remember the first game? A lot of voice acting (voice acting costs money) as opposed to Gears of War which is mostly sound effects created in-house with some repeated grunt sounds and cinematic.

Psychonauts 2 will (if it is ever made) aim higher than Psychonauts 1 when it comes to quality as well as size of game. I loved the first game.

You got your numbers wrong there mate. Just look at the link: Sony UK had a 5 million marketing budget - that's not even including the rest of Europe, Asia or the market where you need the biggest budget, the US. Factoring in marketing for GoW most likely doesn't just double the costs, more than likely triples it (or even worse).

There's the big issue as well, too much money is wasted on goddamn marketing (and wrong marketing as well).

Was there always a /Documents directory with tonnes of internal design documents or has that been included in this update by mistake or intentionally?

Tempted to download now before they delete them, if it is. Someone please check!

I do hate the way Steam patches some of these games when you get those big patches like that.

That's because you download the file in encrypted form. Your browser caches the encrypted data, decrypts it with JavaScript and then offers you a "save as" dialog for the decrypted file.

The "leaked" documents are all from the first Psychonauts, a fun read if you value game design.

EDIT: Same here Kurosaki, I even have it in my steam library Sad

You really should play it guys, if you like platformers you'll love it. The characters and levels are insane (literally), with Schafer's typical humour and brilliance. It has aged quite well too Razz (don't expect miracles of course xD)
