Would you buy more games, than you already do?

Let's assume in this hypothetical, that you can demo games legally, like in the old days.

No, I consider very few games worth buying. I can count on one hand what I have bought in the last 5 yrs. However if games were fairly priced £10 - £15.00 absolute max, then yes I would probably consider buying more.

Nope.

I'd probably focus more on moddable games/series (TES, STALKER, HL) than I already do.

Same here, no.
95% of games that come out I cant see worth buying.
Hell I hardly pirate 1% of the ones that come out now, because I know the time to download, unrar, install, and play will take longer than the time its takes me to realize I dont like it.

Call it a combination of sub-par games that fail to live up to what I call a 'good' game, and my many years of gaming where there is hardly anything 'new and exciting' anymore.

YEARS ago, even somewhat crappy games that I never played anything else like it, was 'fun' for a bit because the genre/style/gameplay was something I never seen before.
But now, between the games being rehashes of old good ideas thats made worse now, and nothing 'new' to experience, I'm FAR more picky about what I consider buyable.

I think (from my view) that its a mesh of those 2 factors..that I've tried so many different games, that when I was younger everything was 'decent' as I had nothing to compare most of it to, I had no expectations...now I have a huge mental collection of what I've liked in games, and the bar is raised on games to at least meet what I expect and have enjoyed over the many years.

for example, FPS..last one i liked was UT2003..now they are all 'call of modern battlefield 3' wanna be realism and achievement get crap..
RTS games are wanna be warcraft 3's gameplays or dumbed down to the point that grandma can kick ass on it while knitting...like Supcom 2..don't get me started, I wanted to punch someone in the eye for that raping of a great game to turn it into a simplistic 'spam ya army!' gameplay removing any tactics and forethought.

So I wouldn't buy more games, lack of being able to pirate a game that I think is a waste of money for 'free' in the hopes that maybe its not as bad as I think to give it a chance...wouldn't motivate to buy and see if it surprises me by NOT sucking.

If they would lower prices to atleast 50% lesser, then maybe yes.

No. I buy a lot of games that are £10 or less and very few that cost more. Not being able to pirate games would make me even more careful about which games I buy.. I would have to make sure that I really wanted the game and that it would last me a while before finishing it.

Most the time this is my story also.
not many games that come out I KNOW i want before getting it. and its the few trusted ones Ive loved and a new version made. not withstanding the few 'must haves' I got before hand to find out they total screwed it up....

That's why I said you can demo it in this hypothetical situation, because this happened a lot of times with me too.

But we all know, in about the last 5 years or so of 'demo' games, they never are a good gauge to go off of for the full game, they pack all the 'fun' stuff into the demo a cliffnotes version of 'this is the good parts'.

its never a true demo of the entire game anymore. its a demo of the polished and hyped features.
sure it may have the meat of the game in the 1 hour demo,
But its like getting a steak based off a small view of the steak, to find out 'sure its a 20oz steak, but 18oz of it is fat and gristle..they only took a picture of the middle 2oz of it they preselected to look good on the menu.

I already buy games I like when I have the money for it and are reasonably priced. Having no piracy would only result in fewer games being played and being more cautious when buying, since I can never be sure about the quality of the game.

if digital copies were cheaper than hard copies i'd buy more games. piracy doesn't suit me in terms of games. Applications yes. Movies yes. Music. Yes. Tv shows. Yes. However in the field im in the applications I need I can get a discount for and get it tax deductible (so essentially free). Tv shows / Movies are just for convenience. Music I buy vinyl rather than CD.

To me game piracy is dead. I buy most my games. last game i downloaded illegally was skyrim, and q.u.b.e. that's it.

Are games worth my money? todays games. No. There are a few im glad i purchased but there are far more that i'm really regretting. (wish steam had a way test drive for games much like onlive does then I'd have a lot shorter catalogue of games but i'd be damn proud of it)

There will never be an end to piracy. You will have physical pirates everywhere. There's a mall here in toronto dedicated to that shit. Gets raided from what i hear, but it's still active. There are people selling bootleg dvds on street corners. It's all about having sources. Once internet is censored the public sources that EVERY SINGLE PERSON KNOWS ABOUT will be shut down and put to an end, private sources available to a select few will still continue.

@garus i remember the spiderman 2 demo. Fucking game was brilliant. Then you buy it and it's just shit. It's always like that in spiderman games though. After first 2 hours the game is shit. It's a shame that there's a pretty much end of quality games. Consoles get the short end of the stick. I'm pretty sure I can list 20 games that are worth buying for ps3 and xbox and that's about it. And I'm sure I'd struggle once I reach 15 for each console. Same is for pc. We get so much shit and we get neglected as a community. It's sad.

it just sucks that we get derps with unlimited pockets supporting shit that it becomes a hit and the next popular franchise. What's even worse that the gamers that do actually matter get no respect from any head exec. And what's brilliant is that you have reviewers out there who have no idea about gaming and are just in it for the quick cash and some internet fame when they disagree with actual gamers about a game they know nothing about and had their kids play it while they paid more attention to the current sex blogs.

ARGH! I should've gone into journalism and started a proper game review site. It's just disgusting seeing revamped shit getting rave reviews. Makes me wish I never got into gaming.

/end rant

Last game I bought was Mass Effect 2 the steelbox collector's edition.
And what did I ultimately get?
For 65 bucks, I got 85% of the game, the first issue of a 4-part comic and a worthless Cerberus access card.
The pirated version came out 1 week earlier, had all the tiny promo DLC's. I also downloaded the remaining 3 comic issues and all the overpriced DLC that came out later and would've cost me another 50 bucks.
I ended up never even touching my legit version of the game.
Scarred for life, this was the last time I bought something.

If there was really no more piracy (let's say all games go cloud in the future then we have a problem) I might buy the top 5 games that come out per year and for the rest of the time I'd get another hobby. Just look at all those steam giftings, %-off, saleouts..throwing around benefits like that just shows that these pieces of software are usually completely overpriced and effectively worth almost nothing.

And no, I wouldn't buy more games.

There has only been two games i've bought in my life that i haven't regretted at some point:

#1 Ultimate Doom - fantastic
#2 Monkey Island 1+2 Pack

The few games I have bought in recent years were BIG mistakes.

I preordered Gothic 3, and was so happy to receive and install... and then get stunlock raped by a boar. and not be able to complete quests, and realise "holy shit, i am a beta tester"

At least when I pirate a game I get a true measure of how good or bad it is before i part with my cash.

I will NEVER buy a game on hearsay or hype alone. If there was no way to pirate games I would find a way to play it for free, lend from a friend or even rent it. but never buy.

Only when I'm satisfied it's worth my money will I pay for it, and modern day game demos (If we get them) are tailored to show a games best attributes and even come with a disclaimer "This demo is not representative of final game content"
