Let me jump straight in.

From the way I've seen it, we have plenty of programmers, artists and even some good managers on this site. We also have quite a few idea men, and realists as well. What I want to ask is, not yet knowing the details, who of you would be up for developing a simple game together? For starters, nothing fancy, something we can make in ~3 months in our spare time as a hobby. Also - for starters, a non-profit project. I'm thinking of a simple 2d game here, btw, nothing fancy.

If our team works well, for a next project we could make a mod for a game.. etc.

Who would join in such a project, and what are you good at (or would like to do)?

I'm a decent programmer, and I have managed many small (~20-30k euro) projects, and have co-managed a couple small/mid sized ones (~100k euro) - although these were not in the IT sector.

I have alpha-tested a few times, and that's one frustrating experience!

Anyway, the basic mechanic design of the game doesn't have a whole lot to do with programming, and any serious person can join in that phase of the project.

Also, forgot to add: even though this is not a for-profit initiative, everyone, who took part will be credited, and that can be added to your CV. That's not a bad thing, especially for those of you who are younger here.

i can help with some graphics design, ui elements or other gfx + maybe some sounds, ambient music etc, depends on the game theme. i have also lots of spare time atm so i think i could contribute in some way just to boost my skills and have something to add to folio.

ive always wanted to make a game, especially some dark & gritty, mature platformer .

I would like to see an Uplink-style pirating simulation. "Pirate Simulator 2010"

You can search for releases, download them, scan for viruses, avoid IP tracking of anti-piracy firms etc lolz. Some of the releases will be nuked etc Very Happy

We've already talked on Steam about this (more or less) Radicalus, so you know how I feel about this. I'll help if I can, but I doubt I can do more than come up with ideas. I don't know how the game will end up, but something in the vein of Unepic would be nice and doable I guess.

First priority is seeing who we've got on board for something like this, only then can we even start guessing at what's possible (doable), and what's not. We shall decide the basic idea by brainstorming and then voting - I want to keep this a democratic process. But we should also make sure, that the base idea is something, that everyone will be interested in.

I have done a lot of volunteering work in my life (been a volunteer at NGOs for about 9 years of my life), and if I've learned anything, it's this: to keep people motivated, success should be reachable and measurable. If we pick a project, that's too long in time, and too ambitious, then we will fail, because people will get demotivated over time, no matter how cool it all seemed initially. So we need something relatively easily reachable. That's why I proposed around 3 months. That's not a lot of time, and something simple can be achieved.

I'm thinking the very first thing, aside from the main idea and design (game design, not graphical), that we should do is game mechanics. Once we see, that the concept works (if), then we can progress on to fine tuning it with music, story, tweaking the graphical assets and so forth, but we have to pace ourselves, set goals, goals we can achieve and feel success about. That and only that can keep a non-profit group going, imho.

^ agree completely. gather & choose ideas, make some kind 'proof of concept' ie, platformer game - platformer mechanics, runing, jumping, hit detection etc, then progress to flesh it out

count me in, as long as we don't go overboard with the language we're using.
Know a little bit of coding and I've got a vivid fantasy so I could throw in an idea or two if needed.
Oh and I hope this isn't gonna turn out a game like Cargo! D:

Basically, if there isn't someone who can direct this shit and take clear decisions, this whole thing will fall together faster than you can say duke3D. As you might now, too many cooks spoil the broth Smile

After a point it is time to make a clear cut and come clean on the desired game mechanics. It'll never be possible to let everybody's dream come true :/

If you guys know any programming language well enough, it should not matter in what this will be developed.

I too am a C# .net developer as well. Started with Java initially. If we are to decide to develop using XNA for example, these skills will come in handy. Iirc, others from here develop using .net as well.

Furthermore, a mobile project could really be interesting, and the Android platform is great for that, however I know little of developing on the platform.
