|

I'm sure it happened to many of us at one point, but I'd like to know, if any game surprised you with how good or bad it was compared to your expectations.
Seeing as how I am a skeptical man, I think nothing surprised me in a negative manner, I can usually tell from a few minutes of gameplay, whether the game shall be for me or not.
But I was surprised a few days ago, by how fucking awesome Batman: Arkham City is. I never thought I'd enjoy the combat, but here I am playing it on hard, and I even died a few times, and love the combat. But then there's the riddles - I'm addicted to it, and I actually enjoy the characters a lot.
Also to note, even though it was made with console controls in mind, it is in no way a bad port. It looks great, runs great on maxed details and there's no sign of mouse smoothing or acceleration. Other developers should take note!
So - what surprised you?

Just Cause 2 surprised me. I hated the first game but loved the second.
The opposite for Call of Juarez The Cartel. I liked the first two games, but was surprised how shitty the third was.

When Hitman 2: Silent Assassin came out, I was sure that no game in that franchise could be better than that. Then Blood Money came out and proved me wrong.

Deus Ex HR surprised me in a good way. Expected garbage, instead got average. Distant Worlds is another happy surprise, expected average( for an indie game), instead got something to rival and in some ways exceed the classics, now that it's got a couple of expansions.
Other than that it's all pretty much met my very low expectations for the last years.

Dead Island.
Everybody was jizzing about the trailer and some (maybe most? from what I've seen at least from the console derpa crowd I'd say most people) ended up being disappointed by the final product.
I thought the trailer was alright, but I didn't really have any expectations towards the game and boy was I wrong.
Immense open levels, nice skill development, decent crafting system, fun combat system even with M+KB, etc.

Deadspace. Never had an interest in the game and tried it when it came out. Still love it now.

Out of top of my head.(maybe I will go through my games and thonk of something else)
Timeshift. Totally. Totally fun and suprisingly good game. Still amongst most underrated.
And i usually get suprised my adventure games.
