Quote: | “A deserted island… a lost man… memories of a fatal crash… a book written by a dying explorer.”
Dear Esther is a ghost story, told using first-person gaming technologies. Rather than traditional game-play the focus here is on exploration, uncovering the mystery of the island, of who you are and why you are here. Fragments of story are randomly uncovered when exploring the various locations of the island, making every each journey a unique experience. Dear Esther features a stunning, specially commissioned soundtrack from Jessica Curry.
Forget the normal rules of play; if nothing seems real here, it’s because it may just be all a delusion. What is the significance of the aerial – What happened on the motorway – is the island real or imagined – who is Esther and why has she chosen to summon you here? The answers are out there, on the lost beach and the tunnels under the island. Or then again, they may just not be, after all… |
Key features:
Every play-through a unique experience, with randomly generated audio, visuals and events.
Explore Incredible environments that push the Source engine to new levels of beauty.
A poetic, semi-randomised story like you've never experienced in a game before.
Stunning soundtrack featuring world-class musicians.
An uncompromisingly inventive game delivered to the highest AAA standards.
Its coming out today on steam, looks very interesting.

Regarding the ending...
Spoiler: | Hmm, how does it really end? I was walking towards a tower (the night level with the bright moon), the character climbed it, jumped off and a fly-through sequence initiated which stopped right above the water and all went black. And nothing kept on happening. I was forced to go to the main menu and exit. Was this the whole 'game'? |

Yes. Now think about it and try to make up your mind what it was all about.

Gonna get this today when I get home.
No action? Just adventure? Scary? Similar to Amnesia?

No action, you just walk and listen to the narrator, not scary, just very atmospheric ;P

For a game that has no "gameplay" in it, this game is getting very high numbers in the review arena.
I wish all games had visuals like this one and Alan Wake.

I played through it...it's an interesting experience and it started off kind of like "wtf is this shit" but somehow the narrative and the desolate island kinda compels you to keep going. This will be a love it or hate it thing for sure for most people.

Yeah not really "getting" this. Sure it looks nice but I gave up after 30 minutes of it not delivering an actual game experience.

I liked it - this game is about atmosphere. Turn up your speakers and hear the wind howling around you, listen to the sea crashing against the cliffs. Take in the surroundings. I believe this is the reason the walking speed is so slow. So you don't hurry through the game. The only downside to the visuals for me was the vegetation - it didn't move with the wind but constantly swayed in a fixed pattern.
Not to mention that the narrator had a great voice and I loved listening to him, I just might get an audiobook or two read by him.
The narrative is a rather puzzling, though. You see traces of things you've done on the island but the ending is rather confusing. The developers probably want players to go through the game several times.

I pretty much agree. This isn't a game at all, but some kind of interactive experience. Through exploring the island you explore the story. Unfortunately, it's told rather confusingly, at least for me. In any case, the music and the visuals made it quite an interesting experience.

That's pretty much what I took from it.
Some other players have gone far deeper in terms of there observations of the game, but the spoilered quote covers it as well as anything I have read.

I liked this explanation:
Spoiler: | Quote: | The Man (protagonist) is driving along with his wife Esther Donnelly when Paul Jacobson crashed into him. Esther was killed in the crash, Paul and the Man survived. The Man poured all his resources into understanding the how's and why's of the accident when in truth it was the loss and grief that mattered, not the circumstances. The Man walked away from the accident with a busted leg, resulting in a limp.
As his sorrow mounted, he committed suicide, after reconciling with Paul and admitting to him that it really was nobody's fault. The heart-shattering finale with the bird/soul allegory sequence is a re-enactment of his suicide. |
|
|
Pretty much what I thought, though
Spoiler: | I didn't quite understand the connection between Jacobson and the shepherd who came to the island and lost his life due to illness. I also couldn't figure out the meaning of the electrical diagrams and chemical formulas drawn everywhere. |

Spoiler: | Looks like some of the symbols painted on the wall were alcohol-related (with one of them being the chemical formula for ethanol), while some of the formula diagrams represented the functioning of ABS brake circuits. |

"killed by a drunk" was mentioned and intoxication was referenced elsewhere too
nobody's fault?
i would murder that bastard
|
the sound clips are randomized on each playthrough
which i think is a bit silly.. i'm not going to walk through it all over again
it's like one of those ten minute short films you see in film festivals
it's pretty and has interesting ideas
i'd like to see more like this, but if they expect me to pay for it, it better live up to it
it's a fun art-game but it's not worth 8.99e

Comparison video of the mod version and the commercial one. Very impressive :shock |
or he could have just used the cryengine and have most of his work done for him by the engine and game resources
