yes yes ive never played the games before, and i know what you're going to say, to which i respond yes yes i know, shut the fuck up.

anyway, i have the games now, and im wondering which one i should play first. which is the less frustrating and "better" experience to ease myself into... my reasoning is that if i have a positive experience with one game, the other game (whatever flaws and difficulties i have), ill be much easier to ignore and enjoy the game.

FO1 is better, more atmospheric, focused and with a better story (*certain faction in FO2* sucks).

i heard the first game has a time limit set on it? usually i hate those, because i prefer not to be rushed. how annoying is it? and to what extent does it detract from exploring in the game?

there's a time limit but it is not too strict
you always see the days in the mission interface and only run out if you don't pay attention (there's lots of days)

i personally liked fo2 more
i don't see how 'focused' is a plus for an open world rpg
fallout2 has double the cities and improved on many areas
but there is no clearcut "better"
they're both great
you could do them both in order

These games are very hard to play, now that we are all casualized and that there are no more games like that. keep this in mind

This!

I'd also suggest this mod for F2: http://www.shacknews.com/file/17189/fallout-2-restoration-project-v20 (Don't know if something similar is available for F1 as well)

Also, if you're worried about the time limit for finding the water chip in F1;

Do you still need Restoration Project if you have the GOG version? That's supposed to be the final version with patches.

Restoration Project is a fan project, so yes you need to install it separately. Works with GOG version just fine.

Those are unofficial, so I doubt they're in any retail version.

This. Both are absolutely awesome games and they deserve to be played (and re-played) by every self-respecting RPG fan.

Go to the inventory, equip the pistol/knife and approach the filthy rat.

Then press the big awesome button that you can find in the middle of the screen

The cursor suddenly changes, the rat starts feeling the tension through its hairy body, click on the rat and enjoy the sad bloody show

I would say Fallout 2 ... why well its a game that you need 2 months [60 x 3 - 4 h = 180~240 hours] just to finish the main campaign , and the whole world is so big its wow hard to describe ...

Fallout 1 well its a short game i needed 3 days [3 sittings x 4h=12 hours] to complete it with its side-missions , and well that time limit its not really a problem when you find water merchants you can extend it like FOREVER , but compared to F2 its a short turn based RPG game ... but oh well this game has also a second time limit that well i don't know if i should talk about

i prefer fallout 1 because it felt more serious. fallout 2 took it too far on the comedy side IMO, but it was still great. i completed them back to back for the first time in 2011 and they were both amazing. thats a testament to true game quality: when you can play them over a decade later without nostalgia tinted glasses, and they still blow your mind.

Story wise Fallout 1 FTW ! Speaking of comedy, playing Fallout 2 as a woman character is hilarious, you can whore your way out from almost all non-combat encounters Laughing

Yes. You won't be able to do the majority of side quests, but it is worth it for the conversations with Algernon/Torr.
