t's another fantasy RPG for those who enjoy losing themselves in a magical, mystical world.

Today, Little Orbit has announced that Brandon Sanderson's acclaimed "Mistborn" series will be coming to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac. The game will be called Mistborn: Birthright and will arrive later in 2013.

Set in an intimidating dark world of "ash, mist and gothic fantasy creatures," the land suffers under the iron grip of the Lord Ruler. There are also rare individuals who can use a powerful rule-based magic system known as Allomancy, which lets them enhance their inherent skills by ingesting and "burning" flakes of metal. Those who can burn a single metal are known as Mistin, and those who can burn all metals are called Mistborn.

This RPG will unsurprisingly feature an original storyline penned by Sanderson. The plot is set hundreds of years before the first "Mistborn" novel, and the focus will be on a "unique combat system that puts Allomancy into the hands of gamers." Players will step into the boots of Fendin "Fiddle" Fathvell, a cocky young noble who must work to master his abilities before darkness can destroy his family.

By the way, Sanderson just finished story development on Infinity Blade II, and he is also finishing work on the final novel in the late Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series. Said Sanderson:

"As an avid gamer, I'm extremely excited by this opportunity. The chance to write the story for a Mistborn game while working with a team of talented developers is, quite literally, living a dream."

The books are decent enough, but the setting and magic systems is what's cool about them. Hopefully they'll be able to translate that to the game as well, though I really doubt it. Probably just gonna end up generic and boring, with the magic system greatly simplified. Also, console port.

Doesn't say it's a console port. Could just be parallel developed.

For a moment there... I thought this is related to Birthright: The Gorgon's Alliance. A game which really deserves a sequel

However the synopsis for this game does not look bad at all. Might be good, just have to wait and see.

I love the mistborn trilogy books, but I don't see how they could convert the awesomeness of the books to a game.

It'll probably be a cover shooter with rpg elements where you shoot people with coins and loot metal off of them to burn for special abilities.

Of course it could also be cool but I'd rather have lower expectations and be pleasantly surprised Smile

Could be interesting with the limiting factors of both metal supplies as well as burning too much poisoning you and flaring it for a quick boost on whatever ability. Jumping around on rooftops, fighting other mistborn, political intrigue,..
It'd have to be a lot of stealth basically, sneaking around using your abilities to see what's going on around you alá arkham asylum/city detective mode and shit.

Hi Mistborn fans...

First, we would like to apologize for the lack of updates on Birthright.

Here is a little background:

About a year and half ago we had just started full production on the game when half of the development studio working on Birthright got sold to another major publisher. Losing that many staff forced us to put the project on hold, but our expectation at the time was to immediately move to another developer and resume production.

We've now spent over a year trying to put all the pieces back together, so that we could give fans an meaningful update.

While there still isn't a lot of official detail that can be revealed at this time, here is what we can say:

- We are still very much committed to getting the game made, but it's important that we choose the right developer and deliver a game we can all be proud of
- We're staying with Brandon Sanderson's original storyline that he created just for the game back in 2012
- Due to the addition of new console platforms, we've made the decision to start over from scratch to support Xbox One, PS4, X360, PS3, and PC
- A new developer has been selected, but contracts are still in negotiation
- We're now targeting a Fall 2015 release date

We will definitely post more information as the project moves forward.

Hi Mistborn fans,
Again, please accept our apology for the lack of information.
Little Orbit is now five years old, and over that time we have interviewed many fans and asked exactly what kind of Mistborn game they would like to see. Unsurprisingly we learned there aren't many developers in the world that can do Birthright justice. Even Little Orbit as a publisher has taken on larger and larger projects in an effort to mature and grow to a point where we could properly support a AAA Mistborn game.
We spent much of 2014 working with a couple developers to map out a game that fans would love. And while this project has taken much longer than we had anticipated, it is still moving forward.
- The game design is complete
- The game follows Brandon's original storyline which takes place in the early years of the Final Empire [edited - thanks!]
- The game is going to be on XboxOne, PS4, Xbox360, PS3, and PC
- We're targeting a Fall 2016 release
We hope to announce some significant details about the game and the new developer in early 2015. We appreciate your patience.
In the meantime make sure to check out Brandon's "State of the Sanderson" for big Mistborn news on the books.

As a fan of the books I must say they would make quite good games, if done properly. There are plenty of action scenes, a good plot with lots of twists but not so many characters, a great setting for parcour-style exploration and a very intriguing combat system based on pulling/pushing and bullet time.

I hope they'll do them justice, they deserve a AAA production.

Yea, when I read Mistoborn one of the things that instantly crossed my mind was: "damn, this could've made a pretty cool game". The way magic works in the world is perfectly suited for an action RPG - with some hard work it's actually possible to cover almost all of it in an interesting and doable way. I really wish the game gets made and doesn't end up as vaporware. Esspecially since it apparently has Sanderson's blessing and a script by his hand.

Aparently the devs were moved to finish Unsung Story
Quote:
The Mistborn news comes via a Facebook post by Matthew Scott, CEO of prospective devs Little Orbit.

Author Brandon Sanderson had penned an original story for the game, which was to be a prequel to the books. By 2012 Little Orbit had actually finished a vertical slice and shown it at E3, but the game changed as the partners involved in its development and funding moved around.

Ultimately, it grew in scope. By 2014, a potential deal with High Voltage Studios had inspired “a spectacular open-world Mistborn game,” with elements of Assassin’s Creed and Dishonored, combined with physics-based gameplay driven by Mistborn’s Allomancy magic system. That sounds fantastic - imagine ironpushing off rivets in the ground to fly around an open world.

Sadly, two of Little Orbit’s retail distributors “went out of business, taking large chunks of our revenue with them,” Scott says. “Funding for future titles was immediately canceled, and it nearly bankrupted the company. We barely survived.”

Indeed it’s hard to see how a studio could survive without funding, but Kickstarter is an avenue that’s worked before. That’s where Unsung Story comes in.

If you didn’t know, Unsung Story is a tactical RPG, supposedly envisaged by genre legend Yasumi Matsuno as a spiritual successor to his classic Final Fantasy Tactics. Accordingly, it’s secured $660,000 in funding on Kickstarter, but to say it’s been going badly would be an understatement - last we heard, it's not been going at all.

Kotaku have a handy rundown of the whole sorry affair, but to summarise: original developers Playdek not only delayed the game indefinitely from a July 2015 release, but also randomly switched its focus halfway through development to emphasise PvP combat rather than the story-heavy tactical RPG everyone had signed on for. The words ‘PvP’ and ‘multiplayer’ weren’t even in the original Kickstarter pitch.

About a week after the Mistborn news, Unsung Story’s Kickstarter finally received an update… penned by Matthew Scott. It seems Little Orbit are taking over development - after all, that's $660,000 sitting around doing nothing.

“First the bad news... Little Orbit is starting from scratch. We have spent hours going through the Kickstarter comments and researching all of the project materials, and I feel the backers have made one thing clear – we need to focus on the original single player game and Matsuno’s design that was promoted during the campaign. And that is exactly what we are going to do.”

The good news is that Little Orbit will honour the original Kickstarter backer rewards at no extra cost. Best of luck to them - small and relatively unproven though they are - as they try to sort Unsung Story out.

As for the Mistborn game, Scott's done the decent thing and let the rights go. He says they're “back in Brandon’s hands, so he’ll be able to pursue anyone he wants to.” Here’s hoping that awesome vision for a Mistborn game comes to pass, and we get two great games out of all this instead of none.
