Well after living on my own for 8 years, i finally decided that i need some company.

So what is the ultimate choice if you don't want bitching and moaning nonstop from that company (Cool Face)

But yeah, i do want to get myself a dog, but the problem is that i don't really know what race to go for.
Now the things that i think my dog should have.
- Hopefully a race that is known for being hardly sick at all (because then money would be a serious issue)
- A race that loves to be on the couch with you (donno how to say it exactly what i mean...)
- A race that can be alone for 6+ hours (for future IF i ever get to work...)

Prolly some more things i missed, but these 3 are key aspects the dog should have.

Anyone got suggestions what race i should take then?

I enjoyed my Yorkie (Yorkshire Terrier). Small dog, good for inside. It was very rare that he would actually bark about anything, and loved nothing more than to hang out with you wherever you were in the house. Never had any issues with sickness, but you may want to get it groomed every now and then since their hair can get a little scruffy.

Like all dogs the being alone thing really can vary from dog to dog and you can train them to be ok with you being gone for a good while.

A good thing about the Yorkie is that they generally aren't all quivery and crazy like other small dogs. Generally very chill, but enjoy running around as well. I had a cat as well so it was good exercise with them chasing each other around all day.

It is important for the dogs to get exercise, or you will run into behavior problems like excessive barking or separation anxiety when you leave the house. So long as you're willing to give it walks like it needs or put its tiny ass on a treadmill now and then, should be fine.

Just keep in mind any dog can get sick, cost money and heartache. It's really like rolling the dice when you get a dog. I believe you have better chances with a mixed dog and a bit older. I love it you are thinking of the pound. I think it's crazy to spend a huge amount of money from a breeder when there are perfectly good dogs that don't have homes.

My dog is a pound dog. Had a couple of kidney infection through out his life. The salt water fish I think cost more money then him so far. He is the best dog ever.

I think this is in order in all it's large printyness!!!

-- 10 Commandments for Dogs --

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years, any separation from you will be painful for me. Remember that before you buy me.

2. Give me time to understand what you want from me, don't be impatient, short-tempered, or irritable.

3. Place your trust in me and I will always trust you back. Respect is earned not given as an inalieable right.

4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment, I am not capable of understanding why? I only know I have been rejected, you have your work entertainment and friends I only have you.

5. Talk to me sometimes, even if I don't understand your words I understand your voice and your tone, "you only have to look at my tail".

6. Be aware that however you treat me I'll never forget it, and if it's cruel it may affect me forever.

7. Please don't hit me I can't hit back, but I can bite and scratch and I really don't ever want to do that.

8. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right foods or I've been out in the sun too long, or my heart is getting old and weak, I may be just dog tired.

9. Take care of me when I get old. You too will grow old and may also need love, care, comfort, and attention.

10. Go with me on difficult journeys, never say, "I can't bear to watch" or "Let it happen in my absence". Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember, irrespective of what you do I will always love you.

I had a dog for 16 years. Not some fancy breed, just a stray puppy i grabbed from the street. We grew together, i just began highschool when i got him, and just got married when he died of old age (kidney failure was the main cause of death, but his heart wasn't doing good either). I was so sad when he died, i cried like an idiot. I will never get another dog; their life is too damn short and they really get to you and when they die it hurts like hell.

I cannot disagree more. I also have a dog, that is old now (14) and will sooner rather than later die, and I fear that day greatly. But I cannot imagine living without a dog in the house. You don't forget the wonderful years you had with the dog for these dreaded last few months. On the contrary, having a little puppy will help ease the pain of loss.

Look around at the local shelters. You might want to stay away from pure breds and go for mutts. Less chance of defects.

Yea dogs dont live nearly long enough but I've found the best way to deal with it is to just get another dog.

That's a sharpei. Due to a genetic "feature" (I'd call it more of a defect) its skin grows too large and creates those wrinkles. The main problem is that such wrinkles around the eyes eventually lead to blindness as the skin scratches the dog's eyeballs (unless treated surgically).
...but people like abnormal things and decided to breed this genetic disease into a race of its own Sad

Guess you have no taste, as these dogs are expensive as fuck if you have a quality breeder.
So far i have encountered alot of dogs, but the sharpei race is one of the most friendly ones around there (atleast all that i encountered)

i have a "mechelse herder".
I've had her since she was 2 months old (now she is 1,6 years)

it doesnt really matter what race you choose, energy levels will vary alot

some important notes and tips i learned and did.

- Never allow your dog to jump on you or anyone else (dominance, cesar milan ow yeah)
- When you give food or treats, take it away whenever you want (so the dog knows its your food, not his), my dog eats EVERYTHING i tell her to eat. medicine is real easy to give this way
- Walk your dog! walk it every day, every single day for at least an hour, later you can start to walk less, but at the start walk everyday
- BITE TOYS !!!
- go to bars with the dog, the more people the dog knows the better and teach the dog everybody tells her what to do (if you want a guard dog dont do this)
- meet other dogs
- potty training: dont punish your dog when it has already happened, when you catch the dog doing a weewee or a poopoo, give a short hard verbal command and take it outside
- dont get angry at the dog, the dog doesnt understand, try to stay calm
- dogs are very forgiving, if you srew up one day, you have the next day to start again

when i think of more ill post more + pic

ow and on topic: dont try to get a breed if you dont want health issues, get a mix (of "stratier" zoals wij zouden zeggen)
also, you want a big lazy dog, but that shouldnt really matter if you give proper training. Mines always very active running around and playing but i can easily spent a whole day "ignoring" her
