What is your best looking game of 2011?
This is not strictly about the amount of shaders and shininess, but overall impression of graphics art design and style.
For me, there are several games I considered really good, like BF3, Batman, Witcher 2, LA Noire, Portal 2, Limbo. Space Marine and Dawn of War 2 Retribution gave me some Warhammer 40K fix. Skyrim is a good example also of what can be achieved despite working on ridiculously under-powered hardware.
But overall, I have to go with Bastion, it's overall style is a winner.
On the other hand, an example of competent engine and bland bland design, I will go with worst this year - Crysis 2.

I'll have to go with The Witcher 2. Despite being a fantasy game, it manages to look fresh and exciting.

Limbo was unique. Although I would go for Witcher 2.

For visuals, you named some already:
- BF3 is just gorgeous. Little blue hue filter that is a bit meh, but other than that it just looks absolutely brilliant.
- Batman shows just what UE3 is really capable of besides the 500 crappy ports we get each year - and its atmosphere is just absolutely spot on.
- Portal 2 showed just why you don't need a super fancy engine like FB2. Source is definitely an aging engine, but genius map design and (here's the important one kids!) good textures make a world of difference.
I also have to agree with Bastion being the winner though. The attention to detail in that one is just absolutely ridiculous.
Worst? CE3 might be competent, but no more than its predecessor if I'm honest. Its DX11 features are implemented extremely badly, the game itself being shit didn't help it any.
Not the worst though, Rage was the worst. Take your engine, bake in a tech you created as an "addon" earlier and presto: call it a brand new, rewritten from scratch, next-gen engine. It still looks plastic all over, using 6x6 textures doesn't magically look awesome with MT and while MT itself has *huge* potential, id fucked it up. The environments were copy pasted like crazy, with invisible walls in the most retarded places. Fucking aweful. Worst part? Game wasn't even as bad as it could've been, it had huge potential but still failed miserably.
Now, for audio?
- Bastion for its music. Don't think I need to say any more than:
- BF3 - its sound engine has the same quality as the graphics engine. Even something like the Doppler effect, present in all games, sounds so much better in it. Explosions really go boom, weapons don't sound like pea shooters, and so on. Also, the antenna starting to buckle on Caspian sounds fucking brilliant, if you're next to it as it starts you hear the metal inside starting to give in with proper reverb effects and everything.
- Shift 2: no other racing game has ever sounded that good. Ever. Second in quality would be Shift 1. And especially when compared to what should've been one of (if not *the*) best in its genre, GT5, it shines gloriously like

As for the audio design, I'd go with Battlefield 3 and LA Noire.

Witcher 2 for its visuals. Even disregarding the highres textures, the overall style, realistic armors, moody village ambience, expressionate faces, and overall attention to detail (sword scabbards for example, which Bioware claims are impossible to implement) make it the clear winner.
Too bad it falls short in the audio department. Voice-work is excellent (esp. in Polish) but the music is a letdown after the amazing Witcher 1 score. I'd have to go with Anno 2070 for its soundtrack here.

Everyone keeps forgetting about Alice: The Madness Returns this year.
In terms of the best visual design it easily wins out. There is no contest. The game just looks absolutely amazing. Good gameplay as well in my opinion. IMO, it's easily in the top 3 for GOTY for me. A lot of people passed it up though which is a shame. It really is a good game.

I'd go with Witcher 2 as well, the attention to details and level design are simply outstanding. Everything is crafted with extreme quality, a very rare thing these days.
As for the other candidates, everything has already been said ; Battlefield 3, Bastion, Batman, Portal 2 are all excellent examples of visual awesomesauce.
+1 @ Crysis 2 being the biggest failure

Gotta say BF3 for me - sometimes when playing MP, I gotta stop for a second or two just to take it in (like on Caspain on Ultra for example, goddamn). Same with audio - I sometimes think the audio in BF3 is better than it's graphics, playing with good headphones, it's just.. fucking amazing.

Pretty good audio too, along with Deus Ex 3, Bastion and Witcher 2
Oh and what Werelds said about BF3's sound too, especially when you compare it to, say, MW3.

Witcher 2 for best graphics. While Rage had nicely-crafted environments and art. Along with Bastion, Batman (with its well-modeled city) and Skyrim (again for varied dungeons and cities).

Too many games with good art. Very difficult to pick one I'm afraid.

Bastion, Trine 2 and The Witcher 2: AoK (with DXHR not far) are probably the ones that impressed me the most, both visually and audibly.

Hmm Shogun 2: Total War had good Audio and Art. Quite immersive and one of the best graphics I have seen especially considering the large scale battles.

BF3 has a terrific look, immerse environments, for me it wins in that dept., shame about the game play though.
DEUS EX has its own style, and looks brilliant also, but dated compared to BF3 in looks.
Skyrim can be pretty, but you gotta make it so. RAGE was just gorgeous to look at, but failed in every other aspect.
A few indie games have a lovely art style that just makes the experience of them shine without taxing ones GPU. Unepic, Limbo, Bastion etc.

best audio has to go to bf3. i dont know any other game where i was actively noticing how great the sound was.
i would probably give best visuals to witcher 2, but honorable mention to skyrim for blowing me away in terms of creativity... i dont know how many shrines or ruins or villages or other various places of interest i came to, and just stopped, looked, and thought 'fuckin wow..' - it wasnt PRETTY in the same way witcher 2 was, but in terms of creativity in its visual design, i found it immensely satisfying.

Rift.
Considerring the scale it looks great.
When first released a few areas were a little bland, but gradually they stepped up the visuals and it looks fantastic on max.

did mass effect 2 come out last year?
i always loved the scifi design and over all visual look of it but just hated the gameplay
deus ex visual design was also really nice
but i think limbo would take the cake
it was different, minimalistic yet very atmospheric

Best sound: BF3
Overall turd: Dargonherp 2

For me it would be a tie between Battlefield 3 and Skyrim. Yes, BF3 is way ahead technically but if we're talking about pure beauty regardless Skyrim has to be up there as well.
That doesn't mean there weren't other very good looking games for me like Witcher 2, Dead Island and Portal 2, though.
Best sound goes to BF3 easily.

Best art design:
Batman Arkham City.
Every time I play it, I admire this incredibly well designed environment, this love for details, the gothic atmosphere, the perfect animations, the colors. This game is really a piece of art on its own.
Even if BF3 may offer the best engine, in terms of art-design its only a try to make graphics appear as photo-realistic as possible.
Skyrim does best in creating a complete virtual world set in this viking-like-fantasy, but suffers from the weak textures and animations.

Best art: Batman.
Best running (engine): Skyrim
Best overall: Witcher 2. The attention to detail with ubersampling enabled is ridiculous, I don't see anything beating that in the coming 2-3 years.
Worst art: Rage
Worst running: Rage
Worst overall: DA2. Absolutely uninspired and the peak of Bioware's current laziness in full glory.
