|
 |
Hello, i'm here at a friends house and he got himself a vertex 3, now as his MOBO had no SATA6 he had to use PCI-E 4x controller.
Now the benchmarks clock only around 350mb/s read and 170mb/s writem, so i presume that the controller is still set to IDE mode and not AHCI.
I cannot enter setup in the bios of the controller, only space to skip it.
Installing it in windows doesn't give me any utility tool for it so that's a no either.
Anyone knows how i can setup this shit thing to AHCI or check if it's already set on there and that the controller might just be fucking shit?

What benchmark are you using? 170MBps write rate is about on par if writing allready compressed (random) data.
Further - Even with AHCI on you won't see anywhere near getting true SATA III speeds unless you use a chipsets integrated controller. So considering his chipset doesn't have one.. You are fighting a loosing battle here trying to get full SATA III speeds.
Also, make sure you have the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver package installed for the AHCI drivers. They are superior to the Microsoft stock ones. When you install the IRST package, reboot, and you can view your drives from within it; you'll know AHCI is running.
All of this being said, AHCI is an option in the bios you'll need to set. If you can't set it you will obviously never be able to run it.

Found the problem, his Acer M7720 has shitty MOBO, the PCI-E slot is only 1x and not 4x, thus hence the low speeds.

There is no room as the HD4850 blocks 1 slot from being used, but its fine for now

yeah, that should be pointed out with the x16 slots, you'll effectively run both at half the speed, still it is worth trying to see just how much of an impact that makes.
let us know what you guys find out saus.

Not strictly true, my X68 board runs x16/x16 with both slots filled.

I didn't knew i could use the x16 slots for a x4 device, since the sizes are different.
Anyway i cannot try it anyway now as i'm going back to home 2morrow, so that will be something i need to test in 4/5 months.
Thanks anyway, i will post once i tested it

Just tell your friend to put it in that slot rather than wait 5 months for you to plug it in.
Any child could do it.

yeah QFT, removing it from a PCI-E slot can be a tiny bit more problematic though if you don't realize there's a switch to release it.

yep, true again, it depends on the motherboard but from what had been seen previously in the thread it sounded like the particular board does is all.

Update, it was a close call putting it in there, only like 2mm space between GFX and the card, tho in bios the card still only showed up as PCI-E 1x at 5Gb/s (or something like that) and windows was bitching with startup and crashed on me.
I just plugged it back in as they won't notice difference between the 550Mb/s or 400Mb/s with the things they do on their pc.

I ain't stupid, those are already the latest, first thing i do with OCZ ssd's is to check firmware as that is the most important part of getting it to work stable.

That card works well with Crucial drives, must be a issue with it and Sandforce.

I wasn't asking, i was telling you.
It's fine with non sandforce drives. Intel/Crucial.
Try the highpoint 620.
Even @ x1 you should be able to get upto 500MB/s (with a single device attached)
