Quote:

2004's remake of The Bard's Tale had very little to do with the original flick-screen first person adventure from Interplay, but it was a competent action RPG in the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance mold. It also featured a bawdy sense of humor helped enormously by Cary "Westley from The Princess Bride" Elwes in the role of the titular Bard.

Touch Arcade reports that The Bard's Tale is headed to iOS devices, featuring all the content from the 2004 original along with leaderboards and achievements. There's also an in-app purchase system on offer for those who are too impatient to earn gold and equipment by themselves, but everything purchasable can be earned in game by people with more time than money.

If you're right now turning your nose up and making condescending sniffing noises about this not being the "real" Bard's Tale, fear not; the oft-delayed Elite Collection for iOS is set to incorporate several of Interplay's classic titles, including the Bard's Tale trilogy and Fallout precursor Wasteland. The collection in question is being held up by trademark disputes but should be available on the App Store soon.

In the meantime, the 2004 interpretation of The Bard's Tale is set to arrive on the App Store imminently -- it's currently undergoing certification, so we can expect to see it within the next week or so. Make sure you've cleared 1.7 GB worth of fart apps and Angry Birds clones off your device if you're planning to pick it up.

It's going to be interesting to see what the IOS version is actually like. I'm hoping it will be exactly the same, though I'm not going to hold my breath.

was THE shit, I agree Wink The 80s ones were excellent, no doubt, but this one was a whole different game - it wasn't even trying to be the original, not even remotely comparable, instead it was just a tongue-in-cheek nod to RPGs in general.

And I loved it Very Happy

It's out in NZ, due for NA release at 11PM EST and UK as 12AM GMT. 1.34GB and $6.99 USD. I'll be definitely buying this Very Happy

Oh and it requires a 3GS/iPod3 minimum, which is no surprise at all given that the game is an Xbox/PC/PS2 port.

Happy to report it runs fantastically! I'm rather surprised at THAT, to be honest, as the 3GS/3rd is the "minimum" requirement, but hell.. I'm not complaining. Looks great, runs great, controls.... eghhh... it's playable. The UI hasn't been altered in any way from the original, which is definitely not good for such a small screen. Playing it on the iPad would probably be great - but on the tiny 3" screen on the iPod? It's not as fun as it could be. It's such a shame that the "big" developers don't really care about the platform as much as they could do, as the iCade/iControlPad would work wonders for a game like this (or even the upcoming bluetooth Gametel controller) -- sadly it means games have to be updated to support these addons and only indie devs are willing to do that.

Like I said, it's a shame.

Gameplay itself is pretty easy, it's only the menu that's a PITA. Luckily the menu is used sparingly.
