Soo every time there's a heavy disk operation the whole system kinda stutters, that's how it's always been of course, it's not a "problem" just an annoyance. Why aren't these operations fucking trully asynchronous or something ?

Anyway, it's a sata-2 western digital hdd, recognized as running in ATAPI-7 mode on AIDA64. I guess it's just like that, right ?

Cause I just say a new BIOS version for my p5kpl-cm that fixes a UDMA SetTiming error

Where is this ATAPI mode specified in AIDA? I can't find it anywhere. Crying or Very sad

You can of course try to install this new BIOS. I won't break anything I suppose.

EDIT: OK, I found it. My ultra old 160GB Seagate drive is SATA-II ATA/ATAPI-7. And newer Hitachi 500GB is SATA-II ATA8-ACS. Motherboard controller is set in BIOS to AHCI mode.

Hitachi is faster and runs smoother (but it's no speed demon ofc).

Additionally you can move the pagefile to another disk (disk, not partition).

Just how old is that drive? It might very well just be old age, like with my WD 320GB Smile

ATAPI is the name of the standard btw; ATAPI-7 (or ATA-7) is nothing else than the standard that defines UDMA 6 (or UDMA/133 or in normal terms: last generation of "IDE"/PATA drives) and I believe it does include SATA 1.0 as well (or SATA 150 if you prefer that form). SATA 2 and 3 aren't part of any ATAPI standard though, ATA-8 will be for hybrid drives.

It's 2-3 years old. SSDs are too expensive.

It's annoying because my PC is otherwise performing at 100%. I only use external drives other than that, so I can't move the page file.

all my sata2 samsungs started to die, removed 3 of them, only keeping 1x 1tb for the moment (newest, others were 300gb and 2x500gb). Agae i guess. gonna drop this HD soon too, buy a SSD for windows only and some games (not all games, just 2-3 i want in high performance hehe).

with 100mbit download, i gave up on wanting to have huge archives of movies and stuff ... its way easier to just download it again lol.

With the Taiwan floods, WD and Seagate are having supply problems. Prices are getting higher and it might take a while for them to sort it out. WD is talking about several quarters. On the other hand, SSD are still way too expensive. 140$ for 64GB is too much I believe.

At 140 you can get 120 GB nowadays. Still a hefty sum, but if both my SSDs broke down right now I'd replace them within hours.

Anyway to get back on topic, VGA, what's the SMART status of the drive? I'm sure AIDA can show that, if not, use CrystalDiskInfo or something like that. Might also very well be a problem with your SATA controller rather than the drive, try simply plugging it into a different SATA connector; my broken board last year couldn't handle anything on 0+1, while 2-6 were all fine.

My disk died two days ago and it was slowing down my system for 6 months, when I removed it i noticed that my system had started to perform better, the reason that everything was slow was that I had dual boot system first was XP and second was Win7 so when the XP hd started to die or slowdown my whole system crawled because all the boot data for both systems was on that drive, boot times became crazy slow.
It died suddenly without warning and I had to recreate Win7 boot because the boot data for both systems was lost.

Buy a new disk if u want to save data copy it ass soon as possible. My disk died with 2000 bad sectors and I lost all.
I tried using Spinrite 6 to save some data, but I was not able to save anything.

Now Ill probably buy a raid edition WD disk to replace the lost one.

My SATA 2 WD stops responding for 4-5 seconds when I boot up Origin. Smile

is there an option somewhere that makes disk "sleep" or something ? (to undo it).

my drives all seem to go into some sleep mode and when they get accesses , it takes couple seconds, then they make a"click" noise and they work fine again lol (for example i have a external 1tb drive full of tv stuff, doing it and both my 500gb samsung aswell. Only my main (windows) hd doesnt (guess because it is always used).

doesnt seem to have any influence for gaming etc, but its kinda annoying to hear your HD "click" lol.

You should be able find that in power management/power options in the control panel.

Hmm unless the controllers or the the disks themselves have a mind of their own. A Werelds' problem. Very Happy

Internal drives should respond to power options. External drives don't always respond to that, you may need to turn off USB power saving altogether or fiddle in the drive's hardware properties.
